Corban Baseball Defeats Marymount but Falters against UAV on Day One in Arizona

MESA, Ariz. – The No. 4-seeded Corban University baseball team started Sunday with a bang at the Cal Pac Championships, blasting No. 5-seeded Marymount (Calif.), 7-2. The win put the Warriors up against top-seeded Antelope Valley (Calif.), and in a tightly-contested ballgame, the Pioneers edged Corban, 4-2.

"I'm proud of how the guys competed today," said Corban head coach Derek Legg. "It's not an easy thing to do to play hard for two games with a long break in between. This is a great tournament and I can't wait to see how these guys come back tomorrow."

Game one on the day saw the Warriors actually fall behind in the first fame, 1-0, but Corban responded immediately with a run of its own in the first to tie things up. The Warriors then exploded for five runs in the second, taking complete control of the contest. Josh Ebert, Drew Loera, Daniel Freiburger, and Andrew Axmaker all recorded huge RBI hits for the Navy and Gold in the inning.

Marymount did pull one back, but the Warriors added another and then rode Rilyn Lewchuk's arm to victory, as he went the distance, throwing a complete game for the Warriors. While allowing eight hits and striking out six, he gave up just the two runs in the five-run triumph.

At the dish, Ebert finished 2-for-3 with two RBI, while Freiburger went 2-for-3 with one RBI.

Game two saw Corban go toe to toe with the Cal Pac regular-season champions, Antelope Valley, but despite the squad's best efforts, the Warriors fell via the two runs. Freiburger stayed hot at the plate, going 3-for-3 while scoring both of the team's runs. In addition, Jarett Thoren went 2-for-3 at the dish in the defeat.

On the mound, Kris Jackson tossed 7.2 innings, dispersing seven hits while allowing the four runs and striking out five.

Corban (28-25) returns to action on Monday when it will take on the winner of the Marymount vs. University of British Columbia contest. First pitch is slated for 2:30pm.
