SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's soccer team battled with cross-town rival Willamette University on Saturday afternoon at Sparks Field on Willamette's campus, but the Warriors ended up falling, 2-1.
"We started very well in the first half, but then we lost some concentration and conceded two soft goals," said Corban head coach Likius Hafeni. "We are struggling with injuries and hopefully we can have healthy players for the rest of the season."
Willamette opened the scoring in the 31st minute of play when Hannah Deighton scored a header off an assist from Shanna Keil.
The Warriors provided the exact answer they wanted to provide, however, as it was Lexi McQueary who buried a header into the back of the net off a double-assist from Hannah Shore and Emma Kosmala. For McQueary, it was her first of the senior campaign.
The Bearcats struck again to Corban's dismay, as just two minutes later, the home side saw Fionn Fortune score to beat the Warrior defense, making it 2-1 with Willamette in front.
In the second stanza, Corban tried to rally, but it was Willamette that actually totaled more shots (9-5) in the final 45 minutes, and the Warriors ultimately were unable to find anything resulting in the tying goal.
Willamette outshot Corban on the afternoon, 16-13, and owned the corner-kick edge, 5-3.
Corban (1-1) returns to the pitch at home for the first time all year on Thursday, August 30, when it hosts NCAA Division II Saint Martin's University at the CFC Soccer Complex. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m.
