ASHLAND, Ore. – For the first time since the 2005-2006 campaign, the Corban University men's basketball team won a game in Ashland, defeating Southern Oregon University on Saturday night, 66-61. The victory on the road comes after a number of heartbreaking defeats over the years against the Raiders on the road, and it is no doubt a big one as it closes out the first half of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play on a high note.
"It is really fun to watch our team compete, especially off a tough loss last night," said Corban head coach Mitch Freeman. "We had contribution from nine different players, and we needed every minute from them to fight off a tough and relentless Southern Oregon team. We will need to sure some things up for next weekend, but I really like how we are competing as a team."
The Warriors, coming off of a heartbreaking defeat on Friday night at Oregon Tech, showed that they were ready to play from the start, nailing shots from deep and inside to take command of the game early and lead by 12 points at the halftime break.
In the second stanza, the Raiders made run after run at Corban, but this time, the Warriors were determined to stand strong and not let this one slip away, ultimately making enough free throws down the stretch to seal the five-point road triumph.
Jaxon Hughes led Corban to this first win in 13 years in Ashland, scoring 16 points, including nailing a trio of three-pointers. Joel Johnson was also big for the Navy and Gold on the night, totaling 12 points and a team-best 10 boards. Those were the only two Warriors in double-figures, but Beau Roggenbach was also big down low, hauling in eight rebounds.
Corban's defense proved to be stifling, holding the Raiders to just a 29.0% shooting mark from the field and just a 20.0% clip from beyond the arc.
Offensively, Corban shot 41.2% overall and 30.4% from deep, while also hitting 65.4% of its shots from the charity stripe. The Warriors led wire-to-wire in the victory.
Corban (13-6, 4-5 CCC) returns to the hardwood next Friday and Saturday when it takes on Eastern Oregon University and College of Idaho. Tipoffs are set for 7:30 p.m. PST on Friday and 6:30 p.m. PST on Saturday.
