Corban Men’s Basketball Shocks No. 2 College of Idaho with Overtime Buzzer-Beater

CALDWELL, Idaho – Dalton Patchen tipped in a missed shot with two seconds remaining in overtime on Saturday, lifting the Corban University men's basketball team to a shocking come-from-behind upset win over No. 2-ranked College of Idaho, 85-83. The win was the first for the Warriors in Caldwell since the 2011-12 season.

"Wow! Our guys showed tremendous heart and fight tonight," said Corban head coach Mitch Freeman. "To find a way to come back from behind, down 18 with 10 turnovers in the first half and beat a very good College of Idaho team took a monster effort and all 45 minutes! I am so proud of them!"

Trailing by 18 points at the halftime break, the Warriors came out flying in the second half, led by AJ Hodges in the comeback effort. Hitting three-point attempt after three-point attempt, the Warriors inched and clawed back to within striking distance of the Yotes.

The hot shooting continued all over the floor, and Corban actually took a lead late on in regulation. The No. 2-ranked Yotes proved to be a tough team to put away however, taking the lead back with less than a minute to play. Corban's Joel Johnson was then fouled with 15 seconds remaining on the clock, putting him at the line with a chance to tie it.

Johnson proved to be clutch, making one free throw to tie the contest, and after the Yotes missed a shot at the buzzer, the two squads went to overtime.

Trading made shot for made shot in the extra period, it looked as if it was going to come down to the wire once again. With Hodges carrying the squad in overtime and scoring 10 points in the extra five minutes, the game was tied with 25 seconds left when Joel Johnson came up with maybe the biggest blocked shot of his Warrior career, giving Corban the final possession with a chance to win it.

Hodges drove the lane and put up a runner that rimmed out, but Patchen was there at the cylinder, and while falling backwards, tipped in Hodges' missed shot to put the Warriors up by two points with two seconds left on the clock. The Yotes tried a three-quarter court shot as time expired, but it missed and the ecstatic Warrior bench rushed the court and mobbed Patchen.

That tip-in gave Corban its two most important points of the night, but they were just two of Patchen's 16 in the triumph. He finished 7-for-13 from the floor with a team-best 13 boards.

Hodges' career-best performance was one for the ages, as while draining big shot after big shot in front of the Yotes' rowdy student section, he finished with 33 points. Hodges went 12-for-23 from the field, hitting 8 of his 14 attempts from beyond the arc while also hauling in six boards and nabbing two steals.

"I am very happy for AJ," said Freeman. "He was dynamic tonight! He found a way to get a big basket every time we needed one, his teammates were able to find him, and he made some really tough shots!"

Jaxon Hughes also proved to be clutch for the Navy and Gold, scoring 11 points while sinking three long-range shots. Additionally, Beau Roggenbach added 10 points in the victory.

For the No. 2-ranked Yotes (20-3, 9-2 CCC) in the loss, Talon Pinckney scored 23 points, while Connor Desaulniers totaled 15 points for C of I.

Corban shot 47.1% overall and 45.2% from deep, while defensively, the Warriors held the Yotes to just a 36.0% shooting mark overall and only a 37.1% clip from downtown.

The Warriors (14-7, 5-6 CCC) return home to play in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center next Friday and Saturday when they host The Evergreen State College and Northwest University. Tipoff is slated for 7:30 p.m. both nights.
