COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – In the first of three pivotal Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) matches this weekend, the No. 7-ranked Corban University volleyball team took care of business against Walla Walla University on Thursday night, downing the Wolves in four sets (25-7, 25-16, 21-25, 25-9).
"Great start to our weekend getting a win on the road!" said head coach Kim McLain. "It was a team effort all the way around."
It was all Warriors in set one, as the Navy and Gold earned a dominating 25-7 victory to open the match. It was more of the same in the next game, as Corban took a two game to none advantage with a 25-16 triumph in set two.
The hometown Wolves refused to surrender quietly, however, earning a 25-21 set-three win to force another game—their first set win over Corban in the history of the two CCC schools.
Corban saw a dominating return to form in set four, sealing the match to the tune of a 25-9 margin and .458 attack percentage.
Avari Ridgway turned in a phenomenal stat line in the victory, collecting a game-high 15 kills while hitting at a ridiculous .565 clip. Lanae Wohlmacher also turned in one of the top performances of her young Warrior career, registering seven kills on just one error (.600 attack percentage) in the win.
Cierra Leopoldino led a trio of Warrior setters—which included Jadyn Mullen (16 assists) and Ciarra Judson (12 assists)—with 17 assists. Defensively, Kealani Ontai was the only player on either side to surpass the 10-dig mark, finishing the night with 21.
With the defeat, the Wolves move to 1-17 overall, and 0-11 in conference competition.
The Warriors (13-3, 10-0 CCC) are now exactly halfway through their CCC regiment, going unscathed to this point in the 2019 conference season.
The next two matches promise to be thrilling challenges, however, as the Navy and Gold will continue their three-game road stand with battles against No. 5 Eastern Oregon University and No. 23 College of Idaho on Friday and Saturday.
