(RV) Warrior Men’s Soccer Triumphs over Evergreen in 2OT Thriller, 2-1

OLYMPIA, Wash. – For the second time in as many days, the (RV) Corban University men's soccer team triumphed in thrilling fashion, with Matheus Giron once again providing the game-winning goal for the Warriors. The Navy and Gold toppled the Evergreen State Geoducks in double overtime by a final score of 2-1 to remain undefeated on the season.

"Our team showed a lot of character to grind out the win today," said head coach Tim Kagey. "Matheus had another key performance for us. We will now look to prepare for another away trip next week."

After a scoreless first 45 minutes of play, Evergreen's Mitchell Balmer—a 2018 All-Conference Honorable Mention—put the Geoducks ahead just moments into the second half, forcing the Warriors to play from behind for the second-consecutive match.

Though Corban consistently created offensive opportunities throughout the contest, the squad didn't find its answer until the 80th minute, when Yuki Onishi delivered the equalizer. After regulation time wound down with the score still knotted up at one apiece, the two teams went to golden goal overtime.

Neither squad was able to find the back of the net in the first overtime period, though Balmer did manage to put a strike on frame that would end up being saved by Warrior keeper Nic Farr.

In the second overtime period, it was Giron who once again played the hero for the Navy and Gold, delivering his second game-winner in as many games in the 103rd minute of play. Hakeem Smith was credited with an assist on the goal, which sealed a six-point road weekend of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) competition for the Warrors.

Evergreen (4-6) moves to 2-4 in CCC play with the defeat, while the Warriors (8-0-1, 6-0 CCC) remain unbeaten on the 2019 season.

In the final stretch of a demanding six-game road swing, Corban will travel to Montana for conference bouts against the University of Providence and Carroll College next weekend. The Friday and Saturday matchups are slated to begin at 1 p.m. MST and 1:30 p.m. MST, respectively.
