Avendano’s Hat Trick Lifts Corban Men’s Soccer to CCC Title Game

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The No. 1-seeded Corban University men's soccer team will have an opportunity to sweep both the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Regular-Season and Tournament titles on Friday, defeating No. 7-seeded Evergreen in a 4-3 thriller in Wednesday evening's CCC Semifinal, presented by U.S. Bank.

Camilo Avendano doubled his season goal total with a hat trick in the triumph, capped off by a brilliant game-winner in the final minute.

"It was a tough match today," said head coach Tim Kagey. "Milo really showed some incredible leadership with his performance. We're excited to be in the final."

The seventh-seeded Geoducks sent shockwaves throughout the conference when they defeated No. 2 seed Rocky Mountain on Tuesday, and the squad from Olympia, Wash. had similar upset aspirations in its matchup with top-seeded Corban this evening.

The Warriors flexed their muscle early on in the contest, with Avendano giving Corban a 1-0 lead less than three minutes into play. The senior midfielder bent a corner kick into the back of the net, sneaking past the Geoduck back line to provide the Warriors an early lead.

Avendano then struck again in the 12th minute, heading in a beautiful cross from Matheus Giron.

The Geoducks scratched one back in the 29th minute, with Josh Dubinsky halving the deficit on his first goal of the season. The Warriors immediately answered back, however, with Avendano assisting a goal from Miguel Rodriguez (3).

The persistent Geoducks refused to go quietly, trimming the lead again right before the half. This time it was Lucas Alcala with the strike, drawing Evergreen within one at the midway mark.

Both offenses struggled to gain traction early in the second half, until a yellow card given to Chadwayne Johnson in the box provided Evergreen with a golden opportunity to equalize.

The Geoducks once again called upon Alcala, who converted the penalty kick to tie the game at three with less than 15 minutes remaining in regulation.

With the game coming down to the wire, Avendano sealed the performance of his career, scalding a shot past the outstretched dive of Evergreen's Tristan Glaser to put the game on ice.

Touted for his leadership and selflessness on the pitch, Avendano—know as 'El Capitan' by his teammates—delivered a career performance when his team needed it most.

The win puts the Warriors in the CCC Tournament Championship, which will take place on Friday morning. On the other side of the bracket, Eastern Oregon snuck past Southern Oregon in penalty kicks, setting up a battle between the Warriors and the Mounties for the conference tournament title.

The bout will kick-off at 11 a.m. in Springfield, Ore.
