BILLINGS, Mont. – The No. 14-ranked Corban University women's basketball team concluded its grueling season-opening road swing on Monday afternoon, falling in an exhibition game to NCAA Division II foe Montana State University-Billings by a final score of 75-49.
"We played three good teams on this road trip and played better each game," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "We were right in there in this game until we ran out of gas a bit in the second half! Our effort and unity are there, and we will continue to improve. We are looking forward to being at home for two games this week!"
For the majority of the contest, the Warriors and Yellowjackets battled back and forth in a hotly-contested affair. Montana State-Billings took a slim advantage (35-31) into the locker room at the midway point, but the hometown squad managed to pull away late by outscoring the Navy and Gold 24-8 in the fourth quarter.
Taryn Shelley did the bulk of the Yellowjackets' damage, notching a double-double with her 17 points and 12 rebounds. She was one of four MSU-B players in double-figures.
Jordan Woodvine led Corban with 19 points (5-of-16) in the defeat, draining a pair of three-pointers and notching five boards.
At the glass, Shaelie Burgess turned in a strong effort. The sophomore center ranked second on the team with 10 points, while also delivering seven blocks. Her seven denials would be tied for third-most in a single game in program history, just two off the team record set by all-time great Tara Van Weerdhuizen.
In the back court, Fallon Hanson ended the night with four points and four assists, while also matching Woodvine for the team-lead in rebounds with five.
The Warriors (2-3) will now return to Salem for their much-anticipated season-opener at home, hosting Carroll College on Thursday at 12 p.m., and welcoming Simpson University for a 6 p.m. contest on Friday.
