Corban Women’s Basketball Falls in Exhibition to No. 2 Oregon, 125-42

EUGENE, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team tipped off against the NCAA's No. 2-ranked program on Saturday, falling in an exhibition to the University of Oregon by a 125-42 final tally. The monumental matchup took place in front of 9,447 fans at the Matthew Knight Arena.

"What a great experience for our team to be able to play against a team like Oregon," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "Our second quarter was very positive, and we competed for 40 minutes."

The Ducks (10-1) stormed out of the gates on Saturday afternoon, scoring the game's first nine points in the squad's final non-conference tune-up of the season before Pac-12 play.

With 10 steals and 11 forced turnovers in the first quarter, Oregon established an early 33-10 lead after 10 minutes of play.

Corban showed its resiliency and capability in the next stanza, running stride-for-stride with the Ducks in the second quarter. The Warriors scored 20 points on Oregon's defense, which has limited opponents to a measly 14 points per quarter so far in 2019-20.

The Ducks—led by Ruthy Hebard (24 points, six rebounds, four steals) and Satou Sabally, four rebounds, four steals)—would combine to outscore the Navy and Gold 63-12 in the second half, sealing the triumph. However, the optimism and excitement for Pilgeram and company remained unmoved.

Sabrina Ionescu, the NCAA's all-time leader in career triple-doubles, dropped 14 points on 11 assists in the exhibition triumph.

Even the talented Oregon roster had a tough time slowing down Jordan Woodvine, who led the Warriors with 15 points and three assists. The reigning NAIA First-Team All-American delivered her typical blend of effectiveness and efficiency, going 6-of-9 from the floor.

Joining her in double figures was Shawnie Spink, who ended the afternoon with 13 points on 3-of-5 (2-of-4 3PT) shooting.

In the end, it wouldn't be enough to overcome the torrid shooting of Oregon, which shot 57.7% from the field and 41.9% from three-point land. The Ducks wreaked havoc on the defensive end, forcing 36 Warrior turnovers to score nearly half of their points off takeaways.

Corban (8-4, 4-1 CCC) will have just one day of rest before returning to action, traveling to McMinnville, Ore. to take the court against NCAA Division III Linfield College on Monday.

"I'm very proud of the team I get to coach," added Pilgeram, shifting his focus to the road ahead. "We are looking forward to our upcoming slate of games."

The contest with the Wildcats will serve as the Warriors' final non-conference duel of the 2019-20 campaign, with the Navy and Gold returning to Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) competition against College of Idaho and Eastern Oregon on January 3-4.
