Corban Volleyball Falls to Northwestern, Looks Ahead to Bracket Play Tomorrow

SIOUX CITY, Iowa – The No. 14-ranked Corban University volleyball team was unable to slow down red-hot Northwestern College on Thursday evening, falling to the No. 2-ranked Red Raiders in four sets (25-20, 25-17, 20-25, 25-16) in the final match of the pool play portion of the NAIA National Championships.

The Warriors will now fix their sight on bracket play, which will kick off with the Round of 16 tomorrow. Corban's opponent will be No. 1 Park University, with the two teams squaring off at 9 a.m. CST.

In Thursday's match, Corban struggled to corral Northwestern's high-powered offense. The Raiders hit at a .457 clip in set one, before attacking at a .433 percentage in the second game.

Trailing two sets to none, the Warriors fought back in set three, battling to a 25-20 triumph to extend the match. In the end, the squad's comeback attempt would come up short, as Northwestern earned its 31st victory of 2019 en route to the Pool B championship.

Anna Wedel and Bekah Horstman led the charge for the NAIA's second-ranked squad, with Wedel tallying 16 kills (.324 attack percentage) and Horstman racking up 15 (.444 attack percentage).

Adriana Aguayo was exceptional for the Warriors in the hard-fought defeat, leading the team with 12 kills on an efficient .474 hitting percentage. Jacquelyn Clark delivered a similar performance, notching seven kills on .417 mark. Both Aguayo and Clark ended the night with five block assists.

Kealani Ontai's 14 digs set the pace for Corban's defense, while Jadyn Mullen (22) and Ciarra Judson (18) combined to dish out 40 assists.

The Warriors (22-9) won't have to linger on the defeat for long, as tomorrow morning's matchup with NAIA top-ranked Park presents an opportunity for the squad to continue its pursuit of history.
