SALEM, Ore. – Some untimely missed free-throws and a missed shot at the buzzer saw the (RV) Corban University men's basketball team drop an overtime contest on Senior Night to No. 25-ranked Northwest Christian, 75-73. The loss makes Corban the No. 4 seed in the upcoming Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament.
"This was a tough loss tonight," said Corban head coach Mitch Freeman. "Free-throws and rebounding were the difference in tonight's game. I feel for our seniors as it would have been great to send them out on a win, but it just was not meant to be. We played hard, but just made too many mistakes at critical times to pull ahead vs. a physical/athletic team in NCU."
As the No. 4 seed in the CCC Tournament, the Warriors will host No. 5-seeded Eastern Oregon University. Tipoff in Wednesday's CCC Tournament Quarterfinal contest is slated for 7 p.m. in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center.
The Warriors went 9-for-14 from the charity stripe, including a few big misses late, while NCU got to the line more, making 19-of-27 while also grabbing 46 rebounds, including 13 offensive boards.
In what was a back-and-forth game for the entirety of the night, the Warriors had an opportunity to win it at the buzzer in regulation, but a shot rimmed out, sending the game to overtime. In the extra period, Tyner scored seven of NCU's eight points, and the Warriors saw a shot fall short at the buzzer, resulting in the Beacons claiming the win.
The Beacons were led by Tyner's 28 points, as he went 7-for-15 in the triumph and 10-for-11 from the line. Tyrus Hosley added 17 points in the victory for NCU (19-9, 11-7 CCC). Northwest Christian will be the No. 3 seed in the CCC Tourney and will host No. 6-seeded Southern Oregon University.
For Corban, AJ Hodges totaled 18 points in the defeat, while Beau Roggenbach (11), Dalton Patchen (11), and Beau Tilleman (10) all finished in double-figures for Corban as well.
"Now, we get to prepare for a very good Eastern Oregon team which we will face in the first round of the CCC Tourney," said Freeman. "So we need to put tonight's loss behind us quickly and get back to work."
Corban (20-8, 11-7 CCC) and EOU will play in the CCC Tournament for the second time in three years. A full preview will be released prior to the start of the tournament.
