Corban Men’s Basketball Loses Heartbreaker to Southern Oregon at the Buzzer

SALEM, Ore. – For the 10th time in the last 12 matchups between the Corban University men's basketball team and Southern Oregon University, it came down to the wire, and for the second time this season, the game was decided by a buzzer beater. This time, however, it was the Raiders that came out victorious, as Aaron Borich drained a shot from beyond the arc as time expired, lifting SOU to the dramatic 76-74 triumph in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament semifinals, presented by U.S. Bank.

With the win, SOU advances to play College of Idaho on Tuesday in Caldwell in the CCC Tournament Title game, set to be broadcasted live on Root Sports Northwest.

"Not the way we wanted to finish the year, but I am very proud of our guys for all that they accomplished this year," said Corban head coach Mitch Freeman. "I feel so blessed to have coached these guys and look forward to all that is in store for the future of this program. Thank you to all our seniors – Joel, Beau, and Dalton for giving their blood, sweat, and tears to this University! They will forever be a part of our Corban U family!"

The last time these two teams faced off, it was Corban that hit two buzzer beaters and a third last-second shot in the second overtime to secure the exciting win. The script flipped on Saturday, as the Warriors potentially saw their season come to an end due to SOU's buzzer-beating shot.

The Warriors, up by four with 16 seconds remaining, had a turnover that resulted in an SOU three by Tristen Holmes to make it a one-point game. Then, after missing the front end of a 1-and-1 free-throw attempt, the Raiders drove the length of the floor for the game-winning shot.

SOU (21-10) was led by Holmes with 20 points, while Teron Bradford totaled 16 points in the win. In addition, Kaj Bansen recorded 15 points on five long-range efforts off the bench, while Tate Hoffman added 10 points.

For Corban in the defeat, Joel Johnson was dominant down low, shooting 8-for-10 from the field for 18 points and 10 boards. Beau Tilleman also had a standout performance, scoring 12 points while grabbing six boards, and he was the only other Warrior in double-digits offensively.

As a team, Corban shot 49.2% from the floor and 30.8% from downtown, while SOU shot just 39.0% from the floor but hit 41.9% from deep.

The 21 wins for Corban mark the first time in 14 years the Warriors eclipsed the 20-win mark for a season, all under the guidance of first-year head coach Mitch Freeman.

Corban (21-9) now awaits the announcement from the NAIA on the at-large selections, set to be announced next week following the conclusion of conference tournaments. Stay tuned at CorbanWarriors.com for full details if the Warriors were to be selected.
