Clarizio Headlines Strong Showing for Corban Track & Field at Willamette Dual Meet

SALEM, Ore. – It was another great day for the Corban University men's and women's track & field teams on Thursday afternoon, with a number of impressive performances stealing the show at the 2019 Willamette-Corban Dual Meet. Among those, it was Hannah Clarizio's effort in the 3000-meter steeplechase that shined brightest, with the senior punching her ticket to nationals after breaking the Warrior record and clocking an NAIA 'A' standard time in the event.

"It was a great day for a track meet, and our athletes came through with some outstanding performances," said head coach Norm Berney. "Hannah Clarizio had one of the best performances in Corban's 16 years of track."

Not only was Clarizio's time of 11:07.00 in the steeplechase a new school record, but it was also 11 seconds under the NAIA 'A' standard, sealing her spot in this year's NAIA Track & Field National Championships. In addition, Clarizio's time now serves as the new standard among NAIA racers, now standing as the No. 1 mark nationally.

In her first meet of 2019, Kendra Murphy set a new personal-record, registering a 5'3.25" mark in the high jump and placing first in the event.

"Kendra, who just returned from the women's basketball national tournament, came through with a win in the high jump," Berney noted. "We are looking forward to a great season for her."

The Warrior women's 4x100-meter relay team—consisting of MacKenzie Wilson, Selina Newingham, Leah McClain, and Kristi Childers —continued to showcase just how talented the quartet can be, clocking a time of 48.76 seconds to earn a first-place finish. Childers would also go on to win the 100-meters with her time of 12.69 seconds, and Wilson would finish first (26.19 seconds) in the 200-meters.

On the men's side, a number of athletes took center stage, highlighted by Michael Schmidt's trio of victories in 100-meters (11.29 seconds), 200-meters (22.39 seconds, new 2019 CCC-best), and the high jump (5'8").

Reagan Shira claimed an individual triumph in the pole vault, clearing a height of 12'5.25" to help the Warriors' cause.

Long-distance runners Robert Swoboda and Shane Davis also impressed at the meet, with the two swapping first-place and runner-up finishes in the 1500-meters and 800-meters. Swoboda claimed the individual title (4:13.59) in the 1500-meters, edging Davis (4:13.73) by less than a quarter of a second. Davis took home first in the 800-meters, however, finishing with a time of 2:04.81.

"On the men's side, we had several outstanding efforts," Berney added. "Our coaches were very pleased by the effort put out by all of our athletes today."

The Warriors will return to the Charles Bowles Track next weekend for the Willamette Invitational, with the meet scheduled to kick-off at 10 a.m. on March 23.
