HILLSBORO, Ore. – The No. 17-ranked Corban University softball team enjoyed a pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) wins in Thursday's doubleheader against Northwest Christian University. The pitching shined in game one, as Sarah Probasco tossed a complete-game shutout in the 4-0 victory; and the offense stole the show in game two, pounding out 14 hits to outslug the Beacons, 13-6.
"The team made adjustments throughout the day offensively, which allowed us to play a little more like Corban softball," said head coach Abigail Farler. "We played pretty solid defense today, but we saw some areas that we could clean up. I thought the team brought a lot of energy and played hard today."
Game one featured a premier pitching matchup between Probasco and Northwest Christian's Emma Jegtvig, who entered the game in the top-five of the CCC in ERA (2.92) and strikeouts (86).
Both arms would throw up scoreless frames in each of the first three innings, but the Corban offense would open the scoring in the bottom of the fourth. Jessie Isham got things started, lacing an RBI single up the middle to drive in Tatum Prechtel.
A couple of batters later, Mahina Chong hooked a sinking line drive into left, which was ran down on a fine play by Beacon left fielder Tra Kucera. Kucera had the wherewithal to double off Corban's Sam Woodley—who had strayed too far off second base—but Isham used heads-up base running to score from third base on Kucera's throw.
The Warriors would double their lead in the sixth, bringing home runs on a Prechtel squeeze play and another run-scoring single from Isham.
Probasco was magnificent in the win, scattering six Beacon hits and striking out a pair in her 11th win of the season.
The second game of the day was a stark contrast to the first, as the bats awoke to combine for 24 hits and 19 runs.
Corban wasted no time getting on the board in game two, plating four in the first, two in the second, and five in the third to take a commanding 11-0 lead after three.
Northwest Christian would begin stubbornly cutting into the Warrior lead, responding with three-straight scoring innings of its own in the fourth, fifth, and sixth. In the end, Corban's early advantage would be too much to overcome, however, as the Navy and Gold held on for the day-one sweep.
Isham delivered yet another multi-hit performance in the 13-6 triumph, finishing a homer shy of the cycle (3-for-4, 2B, 3B, four RBIs) to pace the Warrior offense. Makiah Johnson continued her torrid stretch at the plate, setting the table out of the leadoff spot with a 3-for-5 (two runs, one RBI) game.
Coming off the bench and making an immediate impact, Alyssa Doty collected hits in both of her at-bats, once again proving her worth as a versatile and dangerous weapon for Farler.
Northwest Christian's Kucera (2-for-3), Jordan Kuykendall (2-for-4), and Avery Daniels (2-for-3) spearheaded the comeback attempt, while Jessica Garner (1-for-4, three RBIs) drove in half of the team's runs.
The Warriors (25-11, 13-7 CCC) and Beacons (7-26, 4-16 CCC) will take the field again tomorrow, kicking off another doubleheader at the Gordon Faber Complex at 11 a.m.
