HILLSBORO, Ore. – The No. 17-ranked Corban University softball team and Northwest Christian University each earned one-run victories on Friday. The Beacons registered a shocking 4-3 upset in game one, and the Warriors walked-off with a come-from-behind 5-4 win in game two.
"We did not play Corban softball today," said head coach Abigail Farler. "We dropped game one for a variety of reasons, but ultimately, we just needed to be better and compete harder. I thought we did a good job of answering back in game two and finding a way to win."
Speaking on the series as a whole, Farler noted, "We did not play to our potential this weekend, and we need to learn to consistently come out with a different mindset. We are looking forward to getting back on the field again next week to make the adjustment."
In a rematch of yesterday's opener, Corban's Sarah Probasco and Northwest Christian's Emma Jegtvig took the ball for their respective squads in game one of the doubleheader—the final CCC contest of the weekend.
The Beacons, who were unable to plate a run against Probasco yesterday, came out swinging in the first game today. Jegtvig helped her own cause with a two-run single in the first, then Maya Jenkins blasted her team-leading third home run of the season over the left-field fence in the second.
During the two-run first, Northwest Christian's senior first baseman, Jess Garner, set a new all-time school record for hits, notching the 147th knock of her career with a perfectly-placed bunt single.
Corban plated a run in the first, capitalizing on a Beacon defensive miscue to chip away at the deficit. The Warriors wouldn't score again until the sixth, rallying for a pair of runs to even the score at three apiece. Madison Wyllie had the biggest hit of the inning, sneaking a game-tying single through the middle to drive in Tabby Humphrey.
A go-ahead RBI single from Noel Balderston would help the Beacons reclaim the lead in the seventh, however, and Jegtvig would strand the tying run at second base in the bottom half of the inning to seal the upset victory.
The scoring didn't start until the bottom of the fourth in game two, when Corban notched a couple of runs, but the Beacons would end up negating the advantage in the sixth with two runs of their own.
Alyssa Doty got things going in the bottom half of the frame for the Navy and Gold, scalding a leadoff double to the base of the left-field fence to ignite the Warrior dugout. Farler sent Taylor Beasley to second base to run in her place, and the rookie's speed made an immediate impact. Beasley wasted no time swiping third base, then scoring on an errant throw from Beacon catcher Avery Daniels.
Corban's lead wouldn't last long, though, as Northwest Christian would respond with two runs in the 7th to recapture the advantage. Then, in hindsight, one of the biggest plays of the game for the Warriors came defensively from Kaycee Arase at third base. The rookie made an incredible diving play at the hot corner to rob Tra Kucera of an RBI single, keeping the Beacons from scoring at least another run in the inning.
Down a run in the bottom half of the seventh, Kaylee Buhrkuhl roped a leadoff single up the middle to put the tying run aboard. She would end up scoring on a clutch double from Sam Woodley, who would become the winning run. Corban would end up loading the bases for Arase, who served as the hero, lifting a sac fly into right to score Woodley and deliver the walk-off win in the finale.

The Warriors (26-12, 13-8 CCC) end up taking three-of-four from the Beacons (8-27, 5-16 CCC), snagging two of the three CCC contests. The squad will continue its eight-game home stand next weekend, hosting Northwest University on Friday and Saturday.
