SURREY. B.C. – In a pair of wild contests, the No. 17-ranked Corban University softball team came out with two wins against the University of British Columbia on Friday afternoon. The Navy and Gold stormed from behind in game one, scoring seven runs in the seventh to win the series-opening slugfest by a 13-9 final tally. It was the Warrior pitching staff that came up clutch in the day's latter battle, escaping late inning trouble in the sixth and seventh to preserve a 4-2 victory in game two.
"The team showed a lot of fight today," said head coach Abigail Farler after the day-one sweep. "I'm proud that they were able to find a way to win both games, even though it wasn't our cleanest ball. We had a ton of great offense in both games and saw some great baserunning, which helped us out."
Corban struck for six runs in the first three frames of game one, taking what appeared to be a commanding 6-0 lead after two and a half innings of play. The Thunderbirds would scratch away at the lead with a run in the third and the fourth, but it was a seven-run bottom of the sixth that completely changed the momentum of the ballgame.
The home team pounded out seven hits—two of which came from left fielder Cassa Courtney (3-for-4, two runs, two RBIs)—and plated five unearned runs in the half inning, capturing a 9-6 lead heading into the seventh and final frame.
Refusing to quit, Corban responded with a miraculous seven-run inning of its own. During which, every single member of the Warrior lineup reached base via either a hit, walk, hit-by-pitch, or fielder's choice.
Eight members of the Navy and Gold's starting lineup registered at least one hit in the triumph, while Makiah Johnson (3-for-5, two runs, two RBIs), Jessie Isham (2-for-3, run, two RBIs), Kaylee Buhrkuhl (3-for-4, run, three RBIs), Mahina Chong (2-for-5, two runs, RBI), and Megan Rybar (2-for-4, run, two RBIs) each finished with multiple knocks.
All-but-one Warrior batter scored at least one run in the slugfest.
Ally Crakes turned in a strong effort as the Navy and Gold's game-two starter, earning the win after tossing five innings and allowing two runs (one earned). The bullpen masterfully navigated a pair of late UBC threats to seal the victory, as Sarah Probasco stranded the tying run at third in the sixth, and Lauren Besse worked around two leadoff baserunners in the seventh to earn her first career save.
Madison Wyllie, Chong, and Buhrkuhl all provided RBI singles to pace the Corban offense in the victory.
The Warriors (32-12, 18-8 CCC) will conclude their regular-season regiment tomorrow, battling the Thunderbirds in an 11 a.m. doubleheader.
"Today, we saw areas that we know we can improve upon," added Farler. "We are looking forward to coming out strong tomorrow to finish our last regular-season games."
