KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – There was no shortage of thrilling moments in either of Sunday's battles between the No. 10-ranked Corban University softball team and No. 13-ranked Oregon Tech, as the two Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) powerhouses traded a pair of one-run victories on the day.
The Owls came away with a sweep of the three-game conference portion of the weekend series, walking off with a 6-5 victory in game one of the doubleheader. The Warriors then claimed the finale, edging Oregon Tech in a 2-1 pitcher's duel.
"We had great offensive production in game one, and we fought to keep putting runs on the board," said head coach Abigail Farler. "Unfortunately, our defense and pitching did not fight hard enough to win. In game two, we made some adjustments with our lineup and we got great fight out of the team in all areas of the game."
After falling behind 1-0 early in game one, Corban would take a 2-1 lead in the second, thanks to an RBI single from Makiah Johnson and a sacrifice fly from Megan Rybar. After the Owls answered with runs of their own in the second and third, the Warriors recaptured the lead in the fourth via a two-run bomb from Sam Woodley.
In yesterday's wins, Oregon Tech took advantage of a couple of key big innings offensively. In game one of today's doubleheader, the Owl lineup utilized a different approach, applying steady offensive pressure throughout the contest. Oregon Tech plated a single run in each of the game's first five frames, forcing the Warrior staff to work out of trouble in almost every inning, and taking a 5-4 lead into the final frame.
But Rybar wouldn't let the Warriors go quietly, hitting her second homer in as many games to dramatically knot the game up at five in the seventh.
However, Oregon Tech would return the favor in the bottom half of the inning, with Baylee Wyscaver once again serving as the hero. This time, the right fielder delivered a walk-off single down the left field line to win it for the Owls.
Game two was a pitcher's duel between Corban's Sarah Probasco and Oregon Tech's Loryn Williams. Both would go the distance in the non-conference series finale, with Probasco leaving with the upper hand after limiting the potent Owl offense to just one run.
Johnson once again made her present felt at the plate for the Navy and Gold, starting the scoring with a solo shot (3) in the third. The captain of the Warrior outfield would finish the game 3-for-3 from the dish, rounding out an impressive 9-for-11 (four runs, three RBIs) weekend overall.
"Makiah had a standout weekend for us," Farler mentioned about her centerfielder. "She came up with clutch hits and was seeing the ball really well in each of the games."
The Warriors' second and final run of the day came home in the fourth in the form of Taylor Lawson—who scored on an Oregon Tech fielding error—and that was all the support Probasco would need to seal the victory. An RBI double from Oregon Tech's Shelby Hotchkiss was the only blemish on an otherwise exceptional effort from the junior from Longview, Wash., who now moves to 10-3 on the 2019 season.
"Sarah threw a great game, and Alyssa Doty called a great game," Farler noted, when asked about the battery mates. "Alyssa stepped up and did a phenomenal job behind the plate."
The Navy and Gold (23-11, 11-7 CCC) will return home next weekend for a four-game set against Northwest Christian University. The first half of the series will take place on Friday, with first pitch of the doubleheader scheduled to occur at 2 p.m. at Warrior Field.
