ASHLAND, Ore. – Playing in the elimination side of the 2019 Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Tournament bracket, the No. 17-ranked Corban University softball team was competing with its back against the wall on Saturday.
After downing British Columbia by an 8-2 tally in the team's first game of the day, the No. 4-seeded Warriors dropped a 4-2 heartbreaker to third-seeded College of Idaho in the latter matchup, eliminating the Navy and Gold from CCC championship contention.
"This afternoon's loss was a disappointing way to end the tournament," said head coach Abigail Farler. "We made a lot of great contact offensively that the stats won't show. Unfortunately, we made a couple of big mistakes defensively and in the circle that cost us the game. I'm proud of the fight that our team showed, they never gave up or backed down, which is what I've asked of them all year."
The Warrior offense was exceptional in the game-one triumph over No. 6-seeded British Columbia. Jessie Isham got the scoring started with a two-run blast (8) to left in the first, and Tatum Prechtel added another in the second with a run-scoring single.
A Megan Rybar RBI single and a Thunderbird defensive miscue allowed the Navy and Gold to plate three more in the third, extending the lead at the time to 6-2.
Rybar would then add to her already-impressive day with a solo shot to dead center in the fifth, her fifth home run of the season and second RBI of the day. Later in the same inning, a perfectly placed bunt single from Makiah Johnson would bring home Taylor Lawson, rounding out Corban's scoring in the triumph.
Ally Crakes got the start and the win in the circle, tossing four innings and allowing just two runs, only one of which was earned.
Unearned runs would come back to haunt the Warriors in game two of the day, however, as half of College of Idaho's four runs were aided by defensive miscues.
The Warriors—playing as the visiting team—trailed 4-0 heading into the sixth. Isham and Kaylee Buhrkuhl each delivered a pair of run-scoring base knocks against College of Idaho's Collette Robert, but that would be all the Warriors could muster against the Yote ace.
It's a heartbreaking loss for the talented Corban squad, which will now have to rely on an at-large bid in order to compete in the 2019 NAIA National Tournament.
