MESA, Ariz. – A late Marymount California rally in game one dealt a stunning blow to the Corban University baseball team's postseason hopes in the Cal Pac Conference Championships on Sunday.
The fourth-seeded Mariners would end up earning a 4-3 victory in the matchup, forcing fifth-seeded Corban into a must-win duel against No. 2-seeded Benedictine Mesa. A couple of timely Redhawk knocks—paired with a dominant performance on the mound—would end the Warriors season, as No. 18 Benedictine Mesa earned a 5-1 triumph under the lights at Hohokam Stadium.
The Navy and Gold hopped out to an early lead in game one against Marymount, striking for a pair of runs via a run-scoring single from Justin Tow and an RBI fielder's choice off the bat of Daniel Freiburger.
Aiden Gutierrez and Ulysses Duran would both register RBIs to help the Mariners even the contest after three complete, but Josh Ebert would come home to score on an RBI groundout from Maxwell Jeffrey to help the Warriors recapture the advantage in the fifth.
Corban would have opportunities to extend that lead in both of the following frames, stranding two runners on base in the sixth and leaving the bases loaded in the top half of the seventh. The missed opportunities would prove to be costly, as Marymount would go on to claim its first lead of the game with a two spot in the bottom of the seventh.
Warrior starter Zachary Filos was able to get two quick outs in the half inning, but back-to-back RBI singles from Chris Major and John Muratore would end up proving the difference in the heartbreaking defeat.
With the loss, Corban was forced to meet with Benedictine Mesa later in the day in an elimination matchup, once again drawing first blood in the win-or-go-home contest.
Estenio Sede scored the game's first run, lofting a double into shallow left field and eventually crossing home with the aid of a defensive miscue from Redhawk left fielder Kelby Richardson. That would be the only offense the Warriors could muster in the nine innings.
Perhaps the biggest hit of the night came off the bat of Redhawk eight-man Travis Hunt, who lashed a two-out, two-run single to left to help Benedictine Mesa shift the game's momentum. The tournament host would end up plating a trio of insurance runs in the top half of the seventh, putting the game out of reach.
Gehrig Parks was invaluable on the mound for the Redhawks, helping his team advance with an impressive complete-game performance, during which he struck out 19 Warrior batters and allowed just the one unearned run.
Corban finishes the season at 19-31-1 (16-15 NAIA West), concluding the 2019 campaign with the program's fourth postseason berth in the past five years. With nine of the team's 11 players with at least 50 at-bats—and six of the squad's seven pitchers with at least 20 innings—set to return in 2020, the future remains bright for the Warrior baseball program.
