No. 16 Corban Men’s Soccer Plays to Stalemate with Crosstown Rival Willamette

SALEM, Ore. – Friday evening's battle for Salem superiority provided no clear victor, with the No. 16-ranked Corban University men's soccer team and the Willamette University Bearcats playing to a scoreless double-overtime stalemate at Sparks Field.

"I was pleased with the performance tonight," said head coach Tim Kagey. "We had opportunities to win the game, but we just didn't finish when we needed to. We are looking forward to continuing to grow and improve for our next match."

Both teams mustered nine shots in the draw, with neither squad managing to fire off a shot in either overtime period.

For the Warriors, it was Nate Sherwood, Hakeem Smith, and Freddy Rodriguez who managed to put shots on frame, but Bearcat goalkeeper Mason Kelliher was up to the task, tallying a trio of saves.

His counterpart—Nic Farr—was similarly exceptional, collecting a pair of saves in 110 outstanding minutes between the pipes. Corban's defense provided an anchor for the team throughout the night, shutting down a Willamette offense that entered the match averaging over two goals a game.

The Warriors' crosstown rival has proven to be an admirable foe, having tied the No. 9-ranked team (Trinity University) in the NCAA Division III rankings earlier in the season. Corban will now look ahead to a battle with a similarly-impressive NCAA Division III opponent, traveling to Walla Walla, Wash. for a face-off with Whitman College on September 14.

The contest will serve as the final tune-up before College of Idaho comes to town on September 20, the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) opener for the Navy and Gold.

While the Warriors eagerly await their conference regiment, every non-conference match carries significant weight for the squad, particularly in light of the surprisingly slow start of the CCC's typical heavyweights: Rocky Mountain (0-2) and Southern Oregon (2-2).
