LA GRANDE, Ore. – For just the second time in its past 52 home games, the Eastern Oregon University women's basketball team was defeated on Saturday evening. Corban University topped the No. 18-ranked Mounties (68-57) in a back-and-forth battle, marking the Warriors' first triumph in La Grande since 2012.
With the victory, Corban caps off an undefeated weekend on the road, pushing its Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) win streak to six.
"Two wins on this road trip is a great step forward for this team," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "Eastern is a great team, and to win on the second night of this weekend—while playing at their gym—is huge. Our fourth quarter and composure down the stretch was great."
In a rematch of last year's conference tournament championship, both teams battled for a foothold in the first half, with neither squad managing to separate itself.
Just one point separated the two CCC powerhouses at the midway point, with EOU holding on to a narrow 31-30 advantage after 20 minutes.
It was anyone's game at the end of the third quarter, as the Warriors and Mounties entered the final period deadlocked at 46-46.
For the second-straight night, Corban saved its best for last, opening the fourth on an 11-2 run to silence the home crowd and pull away with the triumph.
Between tonight's monumental triumph and last night's impressive come-from-behind victory against College of Idaho, the Warriors outscored their opponents 41-16 in the fourth quarter over the weekend.
Jordan Woodvine turned in a typically-excellent performance, leading the Navy and Gold with 22 points and six rebounds. The senior guard also tallied three steals, making her presence felt on both sides of the ball.
Coming off the bench, Rayna Pilgeram provided 25 valuable minutes, notching a season-high nine points.
"Jordan really led us at both ends of the court," added Pilgeram. "Rayna gave us a big lift off the bench with nine points, six rebounds, and solid defense."
At the glass, Kendra Murphy collected a game-high 10 boards, adding six points.
Eastern Oregon (9-7, 3-3 CCC) was led by its backcourt duo of Jane Nelson and Madison Crews, who each ended the night with 15 points and four rebounds in the defeat.
With Northwest Christian's loss to College of Idaho, the Warriors (10-5, 6-1 CCC) move into sole possession of first place in the conference standings.
The Navy and Gold will return to Salem next weekend for the squad's first home games of 2020, hosting Multnomah (January 10) and Warner Pacific (January 11). Both games are scheduled to kick off at 5:30 p.m.
