Warrior Men’s Basketball Stumbles at Eastern Oregon, 93-78

LA GRANDE, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team traveled to the eastern side of the Beaver State for Saturday night's contest against the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon University. The Warriors were unable to match the Mountaineers' second-half effort in a 93-78 defeat.

"It was a tough loss tonight," said head coach Mitch Freeman. "We played well, but ran into a buzz saw in the second half. We had a hard time overcoming multiple scoring runs that they made, in addition to our inability to score consistently."

The Warriors were resilient in the first half of the contest, entering the intermission all knotted up at 39. However, the second half was another story. Eastern Oregon scored an unbelievable 54 points. While the Navy and Gold were able to match their first half total of 39 points, they could not hang with the potent offensive attack of EOU.

Jason Smarr dropped a season-high 17 points in the defeat, as he shot at an impressive 7-of-13 clip. Two out of his seven made baskets were three-pointers. He also showed strong ball security in the tilt, as he did not surrender a single turnover.

Beau Roggenbach accounted for 11 points and 10 rebounds, awarding him a double-double for his efforts. He led the Warriors in rebounds in the bout.

The Eastern Oregon shooters were on fire from the field, as they shot nearly 60% in the contest. They were 33-of-56 (58.9%) shooting the orange on Saturday night, along with 13-of-22 (59.1%) from beyond the three-point line.

The Mountaineers were led by a three-headed monster made up of Max McCullough, Landon Jones, and Jamal Heckard. Each of the three had more than 15 points in the game, while McCullough and Jones accounted for greater than 20. McCullough (29 points) was 10-of-15 shooting in the contest, while draining five threes. Jones (21 points) shot 7-of-9 and knocked down four shots from downtown. Heckard (16 points) was 6-of-9 while making three shots from behind the arc.

The Warriors (8-9, 2-5 CCC) have now dropped back-to-back conference matchups, and will be looking to get back into the win column when they host Multnomah University on January 10 in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. They will then face Warner Pacific University the following evening for consecutive home contests.
