“It was good to see some belief towards the end of the day,” said head coach Derek Legg. “Hopefully we will see that continue as we prepare for next weekend.”

Verdejo’s Walk-Off Double Caps TMU’s Two-Game Sweep of Corban Baseball

SANTA CLARITA, Calif. – After rallying for four runs to take the lead in the final frame of game two, it appeared as if the Corban University baseball team was destined to complete a thrilling comeback against The Master's University on Saturday.

A two-run walk-off double from Roy Verdejo flipped the script, however, sealing a doubleheader sweep for the Mustangs after their 9-2 triumph in the day's opener.

"It was good to see some belief towards the end of the day," said head coach Derek Legg. "Hopefully we will see that continue as we prepare for next weekend."

Master's hung up two spots in each of the first three frames of game one, giving their starter Nelson Schutte a comfortable cushion to work with.

It would be more than enough for the rookie from Lenexa, Kan., who gave up just three hits in five scoreless innings on the hill.

A three-run bottom of the fifth expanded the Mustang's lead to 9-0, with the Navy and Gold scratching one of those runs back in the next half inning.

Dakota Fingar brought the run across, driving a double to right to score Nate Cantonwine.

In the ninth, a run-scoring two-bagger from Estenio Sede allowed Brendan Rodegerdts to cross, but it would be too little, too late in the game-one defeat.

Sede would finish the game going 3-for-4, leading the Warriors at the dish.

The Mustangs' senior shortstop Tyler Van Marter was exceptional for the hometown squad, going 4-for-4 with three RBIs and a pair of runs in the contest.

Game two began on a similar note, with five Master's runs in the first two innings forcing the Warriors to play from behind yet again.

A Jared Bell sac fly put Corban on the board in the third, but the Mustangs quickly got that run back with an RBI double from Joel Larsen.

Looking to conjure some magic in the late innings, Kairos Torres-Umi (3-for-4, 2 RBI) drove in a pair with a two-run single in the sixth. The knock trimmed the deficit to three, with the Mustangs carrying a 6-3 lead into the seventh and final frame.

In the seventh, a bases-loaded free pass given to Brendan Yawn pushed another run across, while a crucial error from the Mustangs' Jojo Penberthy allowed two Warrior runs to score as the score drew even.

From there, an RBI infield single from Zach Campbell brought home Jack Ossenkop, capping off a four-run seventh as the Navy and Gold captured a late lead.

The Warriors would be unable to hold the advantage, however, as Verdejo's heroics sent Corban home with its third walk-off defeat in its first eight games.

Corban (0-8) will now look ahead to its final road games of its 2020 non-conference slate, traveling down to Atherton, Calif. to face off with Menlo College in a four-game series next Friday (February 7) and Saturday (February 8).
