Corban Men’s Basketball Uses Furious Second Half to Upend Lions’ Senior Night, 90-80

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University men's basketball team put together a strong game on both ends of the floor in Saturday evening in a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) matchup at Multnomah University, conjuring up a 90-80 triumph and avenging the loss to the Lions earlier in the season.

"Multnomah is such a tough matchup," said head coach Mitch Freeman. "Justin Martin is a special player who changes the landscape of a game. Our guys never gave in to the pressure of the game and fought together until the end. This win makes this next weekend's games exciting."

The first half of basketball in tonight's matchup was eerily similar to the first meeting between the two squads in Salem, as the Lions raced out to a 47-38 lead entering the break. However, the second half of this one took a 180 degree turn, as the Warriors outscored the Lions 52-33 in the late stages.

Jason Smarr and Tyler Wadleigh starred for the Navy and Gold, as they scored 24 and 23 points, respectively.

Smarr was a master from downtown in the tilt, shooting at a 6-of-9 clip from long-range. He added two more made field goals to round out his 8-of-14 (57.1%) shooting night. He also hauled in six rebounds in the effort.

For Wadleigh, it was an efficient 10-of-18 outing, scoring 23 points and adding six rebounds of his own.

Justin Martin for the Lions, on his senior night, racked up 43 points on 38 shots, 16 of which were knocked down. He was 7-of-24 from beyond the circle in his final home game.

Trey Fountain was the only other Lions in double-figures with 16 points. He shot 60% from the floor and added a three-pointer to his credit.

Corban (12-16, 6-12 CCC) is now sporting back-to-back victories with just one weekend left to play in the regular season. The Navy and Gold will be in the comforts of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center when they face the Mountaineers of Eastern Oregon and the Yotes of College of Idaho next Friday and Saturday night at 7:30 p.m.
