Corban Women’s Basketball Takes Down OIT, Advances to CCC Semis

KLAMATH FALLS, Ore. – The third time was the charm for the Corban University women's basketball team, who finally got the edge over Oregon Tech on Tuesday evening in the two squads' third bout of the 2019-20 season. The fifth-seeded Warriors claimed a 71-59 victory over the No. 4-seeded Owls in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Quarterfinals, presented by U.S. Bank.

With the win, the Navy and Gold will advance to play top-seeded Northwest Christian University in the conference semifinals on Friday.

"It was a great team win on the road," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "The team came out playing great team defense and rebounding well in the second half. We were down in rebounds in the second half and that was one of the things we needed to turn around in the second. I am very proud of our team effort on the road and looking forward to moving on to the next round!"

After the two teams' previous two battles were decided by a combined margin of just five points, it was no surprise to see a neck-and-neck battle on Danny Miles Court on Tuesday evening.

It was anybody's game in the early going, as Oregon Tech laid claim to a one-point advantage at the end of the first quarter, and the Warriors owned a two-point lead at the midway point.

The Navy and Gold pulled away in a critical third stanza, outscoring the Owls 19-11 to garner some valuable breathing room. Jordan Woodvine and Shawnie Spink played pivotal roles in Corban's late success, as 19 of Woodvine's game-high 32 points and 13 of Spink's 19 points came in the second half.

Providing clutch performances when the team needed it most, both Woodvine and Spink registered new season-bests in scoring.

"Jordan and Shawnie had some clutch baskets to get us some separation down the stretch," Pilgeram added. "Rayna and Shaelie were big also with double-figure rebounds."

The Navy and Gold outrebounded the Owls by a 30-19 margin in the final 20 minutes, spearheaded by stellar efforts down low from Shaelie Burgess (nine points, 12 rebounds, four blocks) and Rayna Pilgeram (five points, 10 rebounds), who also delivered strong contributions on the defensive end.

Corban's defense—which entered tonight's action ranked first in the conference—was at it again on Tuesday, holding the Owls to a measly 25.7% mark from the floor and 15.8% mark from downtown.

Top-seeded Northwest Christian handedly defeated No. 8 seed Northwest University (90-67) on Tuesday, setting up a renewal of the Warrior-Beacon rivalry in the CCC Semifinals this weekend.

Corban (18-11) will travel down to Eugene to face the CCC Regular-Season Champions on Friday evening, with tip-off slated for 7 p.m.
