SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team was pitted against the Hustlin' Owls of the Oregon Institute of Technology on Friday evening in the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center. After being unable to keep up with the strong offensive middle periods from the Owls, the Warriors fought valiantly in the fourth quarter to make things interesting. In the end, the game reached a bitter conclusion, with OIT ending up on top 61-59.
"We finally got some momentum in the fourth quarter," said head coach Bill Pilgeram, "but unfortunately we dug too big a hole in this one. We need to come out tomorrow and play 40 minutes like we did in that final quarter."
At the end of the first period, the game had an aura of defensive prowess, which soon faded after a 21-point outburst from the Owls in the second stanza. After another impressive quarter in the third, OIT led by a 14-point margin, 47-33. Beginning the fourth quarter, the Warriors' 14-point deficit seemed to be too tall an order to overcome, but the Navy and Gold were nearly able to pull it off. Corban outscored the Owls 26-14 in the final period, and tied the game with just nine seconds remaining, but Kristin Farrell sunk a circus jump-shot with 0.5 seconds left on the clock, which ended up being the nail in the coffin for the Warriors.
The Warriors struggled mightily from the field in this one, failing to reach 30% in the game. Corban finished the game with a 19-of-67 (28.3%) showing.
Jordan Woodvine was the Warriors' leading scorer in the game with 16 points, but she shot just 6-of-18, which was representative of the entire team shooting percentage throughout the game.
Shaelie Burgess posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds. She was just 3-of-12 from the floor in the contest.
Kendra Murphy was the key on the boards for the Navy and Gold, picking up a career-high 15 boards. In addition, she was the game-leader in rebounds.
Kristin Farrell was the heroine for OIT, breaking the 59-59 tie with less than a second remaining to vault the Owls ahead for good. She poured in 15 points in the game while draining three shots from long range. She ended the game shooting 6-of-8.
The Navy and Gold (14-9, 10-5 CCC) will face a quick turnaround, with a home matchup versus Southern Oregon University at 5:30 p.m. The Warriors hope to get back on the winning track after dropping back-to-back conference matchups.
