Corban Baseball Splits First Day of Crucial Series with British Columbia

KEIZER, Ore. – In the first half of a crucial four-game NAIA-West series, the Corban University baseball team split its day-one doubleheader with University of British Columbia on Saturday. The Warriors rallied for an impressive come-from-behind 4-3 victory in the opener, before falling by a 7-2 tally in the nightcap.

"I'm happy with how we came back in game one," said head coach Derek Legg. "I was really proud to see that fight, and that's a special thing to do. It's difficult because we are two totally different teams between game one and game two, and we just aren't competing in game two."

Mason Shaw got the ball in the first half of the twin bill, turning in his best outing of the season to set the tone for the Navy and Gold.

After surrendering a leadoff triple to Jake Lanferman in the first at-bat of the game, Shaw held the potent UBC offense hitless all the way until the seventh inning.

Lanferman ended up scoring on an RBI groundout from Jaxon Valcke, giving the Thunderbirds an early 1-0 lead. That advantage would only last until the third inning, however, as Dakota Fingar roped a missile (3) over the centerfield fence off Garrett Hawkins, tying the game.

From there on out, Shaw and Hawkins continued dueling, with both righties working out of jams to keep the game deadlocked.

Trying to navigate trouble in the seventh, Shaw was unable to escape unscathed, as Ryan Beitel ripped a two-run double—just the second hit of the ballgame for UBC at the time—into the left-center gap to give the visitors a two-run advantage.

After a rain delay that lasted over half an hour, Corban finally had an opportunity to issue a response in the bottom half of the frame.

The deficit was trimmed to one after Josh Ebert reached on an errant throw from Thunderbird shortstop Cameron Sanderson. That would've been the third out of the inning, but the miscue proved costly for UBC. Not only did Fingar cross on the error, but it also opened up the door for back-to-back run-scoring knocks from Nate Cantonwine and Kairos Torres-Umi, giving the Navy and Gold a late lead.

From there, Drew Scherrer and Jacob Bowser combined to seal the triumph for the Warriors, with Scherrer being credited with the victory, and Bowser completing the five-out save (2).

Fingar finished 4-for-4 at the dish, ending the afternoon a triple shy of the cycle.

The Thunderbird pitching was the story in game two, as southpaw Jared Spearing dominated in his six innings of work.

Commanding both sides of the plate with his fastball and off-speed pitches, Spearing allowed just four hits during that span, striking out 14 Warriors.

In total, the Thunderbird pitching staff combined for 19 strikeouts on the evening.

For the Navy and Gold, defensive mishaps proved costly, as UBC's first five runs were all of the unearned variety.

With every game vital in conference play, both teams will be in search of a series win in Sunday's portion of the four-game set.

The Warriors (7-14, 3-3 NAIA West) and Thunderbirds will be back at it tomorrow, beginning another doubleheader at Volcanoes Stadium at 11 a.m.
