(RV) Corban Men’s Soccer Opens Home Slate with 2-1 Triumph over WPU

SALEM, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University men's soccer team handed Warner Pacific University its first Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) loss of the season on Friday afternoon, as the Navy and Gold impressed in its home debut with a 2-1 victory.

"It was a great result today," said director of soccer Tim Kagey. "We will build off this for tomorrow; it's great to be home."

Warner Pacific had an opportunity just moments after the first whistle, as a cross sent into the box was headed on frame by the Knights' Sunjoon Tenorio just 44 seconds into the match. Warrior goalkeeper Justin Keegan corralled the save, however, spoiling the early chance.

Reggie Reyes helped the Navy and Gold draw first blood in the 14th minute, as a loose ball deflected off Warner Pacific goalkeeper Alexis Calderilla-Hurtado's sprawling dive and to the foot of Evan Hoover, who ricocheted it over to Reyes, who hooked it into an empty net. It was the first goal of Reyes' Warrior career, which provided the hometown team with valuable momentum.

After a tense back and forth throughout the remainder of the first half and the bulk of the second period, Corban cushioned its lead with an insurance goal from Edson Jimenez in the 85th minute.

After a Knight foul just a few yards from the corner arc, Nate Sherwood sent a well-placed free kick into the box. Jimenez rose above the defenders to head in the insurance goal.

The score proved to be the game-winner, as the Knights cut the deficit in half with a goal from Miguel Andalon-Ordaz with a minute and a half left to play. The visitors frantically searched for an equalizer as the clock wound down, and Matias Castano managed to get a decent look when he fired off a shot as time expired, but Keegan punched out the strike to ensure the Warrior triumph.

Keegan finished the match with four saves.

It's the first conference loss of the season for WPU, which moves to 7-2 overall and 4-1 in CCC play. With today's result, the Knights and Warriors move into a tie for the second-place spot in the conference standings.

Meanwhile, Corban (5-3, 4-1 CCC) will be back in action tomorrow at the CFC Soccer Complex, hosting Multnomah University at 3:30 p.m.
