EUGENE, Ore. – Only four points separated the Corban University men's basketball team and Pacific Union College with 2:49 left to play in the first half of Friday's contest. The Warriors closed the period with a pivotal 11-3 run in the final minutes, however, entering the locker room with momentum and never looking back. At the time of the final horn, Corban claimed a dominating 87-60 victory over the Pioneers, marking a new season-high in scoring for the squad.
"It was another great team effort from our guys," said head coach Taylor Kelly. "I thought we really focused up on the defensive end in the second half, and that allowed us to separate."
As a team, Corban shot at a blistering 58.1% mark from the field in the second half—which included sinking seven of its 15 shots from downtown (46.7%)—while holding the Pioneers to just two three-pointers in an impressive defensive display. At the completion of 40 minutes, the Warriors shot over 50 percent (53.3%) from the field as a team for the fourth time in five games so far this season.
Kendall Moore was a force to be reckoned with in the Navy and Gold back court, out-scoring all performers with a season-high 19 points on the afternoon, while also adding five boards and a trio of assists.
Darius Henderson was a key playmaker down low early on for the Warriors, scoring all 13 of his points on Friday in the first half. In 23 minutes total, he grabbed eight boards and shot 5-of-8 from the floor.
Continuing to provide a spark in reserve, Taylor Anderson notched 14 points (5-of-8 FG) and three assists off the bench.
"Darius was great in the first half and dominated on the inside," added Kelly. "Taylor led the way for many of our runs; he played excellent for us."
Corban's depth continues to be a strong suit in the early part of the 2021-22 season, as 10 different members of the roster sank a bucket in Friday's impressive team effort.
Meanwhile, four Pioneers—Chris Jones (18 points), Trayvon Little (12), Kyle Durham (11), and Jordan Lopez (10)—finished in double figures in the defeat.
Corban (4-1) will wrap up the Beacon Classic tomorrow against an NAIA top-five foe, facing off with No. 5-ranked Carroll College in Eugene at 1:30 p.m. in a significant early-season test.
