Warrior Women’s Soccer Falls in CCC Quarters to College of Idaho, 3-1

SPRINGFIELD, Ore. – The sixth-seeded Corban University women's soccer team was unable to upend third-seeded (RV) College of Idaho on Tuesday evening in the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) Quarterfinals, presented by U.S. Bank. The Warriors attempted to conjure some second-half magic, but the Yotes were able to endure the rally and advance to the semifinals via a 3-1 final score.

"Definitely not the result we were looking for," said director of soccer Tim Kagey, "But I am very proud of this group and the season they put together."

The Yotes' star attacker Lily Schlake helped College of Idaho draw first blood in the 28th minute, hooking a low strike past the outstretched arms of Makida Herbert for her ninth goal of the season.

It looked as if Corban would equalize on a couple of promising occasions late in the first half, the first of which came after a C of I foul gave Juliana Pires a free kick roughly 25 yards out.

Pires booted a curling rocket, which rattled off the top post and narrowly missed finding the back of the net. Maria-Frances Serrant was nearly able to finish the deflection, but Yote keeper Shae Waters was able to corral it and keep the Warriors scoreless.

Just over a minute later, Mei Suetsugu just missed right with a header off a cross, adding to Corban's frustration towards missed opportunities.

Just seven minutes into the second half (52'), C of I earned some valuable insurance, padding its lead with a goal from Isabel DeVille, who headed in a well-placed corner from Payton Mongelli.

The Navy and Gold refused to back down, however, as First-Team All-CCC honoree Pires cut the deficit in half with a clutch goal in the 63rd minute, electrifying the Warrior bench and breathing life into Corban's attack. The goal helped the standout midfielder reach the double-digit goal plateau for the season.

Unfortunately for the Warriors, College of Idaho would get that goal back six minutes later courtesy of Chloe Teets (69'), assisted by Mongelli.

With the loss, the Navy and Gold's season comes to an end, finishing with a 12-5 record overall (8-4 CCC).

The 2021 season has been one of the program's most successful over the past decade, however, with the Navy and Gold setting an eight-year highs points (111), and racking up its most wins since the 2016 season. In addition, the Warriors scored more goals (43) this season than any year since 2004, a testament to the prolific offense put on display by the program this fall.

Though the squad will have some major vacancies to fill, much of the team's dynamic core will be back next fall.
