Corban Women’s Hoops Unable to Overcome Early Deficit in 77-39 Loss to WOU

MONMOUTH, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team was unable to keep pace with NCAA Division II Western Oregon University on Saturday afternoon, with the hometown Wolves riding red-hot early shooting to a 77-39 victory.

"Western Oregon came out shooting well and with a lot of momentum in the first quarter," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "I was proud of how we bounced back and played after that."

Western Oregon put up 31 points in the first quarter alone, jumping out to a daunting 20-point lead after just 10 minutes of play. Much of that was due to the squad's blistering 66.7% clip from the floor in the period, punctuated by a 4-of-6 effort from downtown.

Corban hung steady in the second quarter, but the offense struggled to gain traction in the second half, as the Warriors went 6-for-39 (15.4%) from the field in the final 20 minutes.

Holly Golenor led the Navy and Gold with 15 points and eight boards, while Gemma LaVergne ended the afternoon with eight points and four rebounds.

Tallying a new season-high in rebounds, Josie Ferry grabbed six boards in the front court, and Gracie McCoy added seven points and a trio of boards from the back court.

Even despite a short-handed roster, a number of members of the squad continue to see valuable minutes, helping the youthful team formulate its identity with each contest that passes.

"We have a lot of players gaining valuable experience that is only going to help us down the road," Pilgeram added.

Corban (1-9) will return to Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play next weekend, traveling south to play Oregon Tech and (RV) Southern Oregon University next Friday and Saturday.
