ASHLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team was defeated by Southern Oregon University on Saturday afternoon by a final score of 63-45. The Navy and Gold started strong, leading after the first quarter of play, but the Raiders took advantage of some Warrior miscues and pulled away to remain undefeated in CCC play.
"We played with as much heart and passion as we have all year," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "I don't think anyone could have played harder and Southern definitely knew they were in for a battle. Now we get a much-needed break to come back mentally and physically refreshed after Christmas."
The Warriors led by three points at the conclusion of the first quarter and trailed by just five going into the halftime break. Unfortunately, the Raiders, who took over sole possession of first place in the CCC with the victory, used a strong second half to vault themselves to a victory. Corban turned in a higher field goal percentage (39.5%) than SOU (36.4%), however the Raiders managed to take 66 shots on the afternoon, compared to just 43 shots for the Navy and Gold.
Turnovers loomed large for the Navy and Gold as they were forced to commit 26 turnovers in the contest. SOU capitalized on their extra opportunities winning the points off turnover battle by a count of 24-6.
Kaci Paffhausen led the offensive attack for Corban with a team high 12 points, while also chipping in five rebounds. Holly Golenor (10 PTS, 9 REB) finished one rebound shy of another double-double for her season tally.
For Southern Oregon, Kami Walk led all scorers with 18 points in the game. She was joined in the double-digit scorer category by Brianna Phiakhamngon.
Corban (1-11, 0-5) will head into the Christmas holiday and look to get back on track in their New Years Eve contest at the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center against Eastern Oregon University. Tip is slated for 5:30 p.m.
