PORTLAND, Ore. – On Thursday, the high-powered offense of the No. 20-ranked Corban University men's soccer team picked up right where it left off after Monday's season-opening blowout of Eastern Oregon. The squad exploded for a dozen goals in a 12-0 romping of Multnomah University, marking the conclusion of the Warriors' non-conference docket.
"We are grateful to be able to play another game today," said head coach Tim Kagey. "We are excited to start conference play."
A testament to the depth of Corban's arsenal, eight different Warriors found the back of the net on Thursday, and five members of the squad registered at least one assist.
The scoring came early and often, as Matheus Giron waited until just the sixth minute to give the Warriors the lead. Robin Terry executed the pass that made it possible, earning the assist.
After a scoreless lull that lasted just over 22 minutes—the longest stretch of the game without a goal—Charles Cleyton found the back of the net on the heels of a beautiful pass from Nate Sherwood. It would be the first of two goals for Cleyton (29', 46'), the 2019 All-Conference forward.
Competing in his first match against his old squad, Noe Favila fired off a beautiful strike into the top-left corner in the 32nd minute, expanding the Warrior lead to three. He wasn't done there, however, as the former Lion would end up compiling Corban's first hat trick of the season, scoring again in 49th and 52nd minutes.
By the time Favila scored his third goal, the Navy and Gold possessed a 6-0 advantage with roughly 40 minutes left to play. The fireworks were far from over, however, as Chadwayne Johnson opened his season account just a few minutes later (56'), with Giron connecting with Johnson at the top of the box, and Johnson blasted a strike into the top-right corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Earning a brace in his Warrior debut, Giancarlo Canas was responsible for each of the squad's next two goals (57', 58'), scoring on back-to-back occasions within less than a minute.
Carlos Llamosa—who was celebrating a birthday on the pitch on Thursday—converted a penalty kick (66') to push the advantage to double figures, before assisting Jose Peralta's first goal as a Warrior (73')—a pinpoint strike hooked inside the left post—just seven minutes later.
The final goal of the contest came unassisted from the foot of rookie Eric Bengana (83'), who has now found the back of the net in each of his first two collegiate contests.
Marcos Ochoa, making his season debut in goal for the Navy and Gold, earned the shutout in the triumph.
Feeling good after a strong start to the season, Corban (2-0) will now turn its focus to Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) play, which is slated to begin on March 7-8. The Warriors' first CCC games will be on the road against Bushnell, with kick-off for each match slated for 3 p.m.
