(RV) Corban Softball Wins with Pitching in Game One, Bats in Game Two versus WPU

SALEM, Ore. – The (RV) Corban University softball team walked away with a pair of wins in Friday's doubleheader against Warner Pacific University, though each game looked vastly different than the other. A complete-game gem from Holly Gonzales helped the Navy and Gold edge the Knights (3-0) in a pitching duel in the opener, while the Warrior bats outslugged the visitors by a 12-4 margin (six innings) in the offensive second game.

In game one, Gonzales and WPU's Melia Croydon stole the show in the circle, with neither team plating a run until the top of the sixth.

The Warriors—who served as the visitor in the two games today, and will do so again tomorrow—finally got to Croydon in the top of the sixth, with a swinging bunt from pinch hitter Tatiana Liu bringing home Kaycee Arase (2-for-4, R).

Madison Wyllie then added some valuable insurance with a two-run single to left, extending the lead to three for the Navy and Gold. The red-hot outfielder went 3-for-3 at the dish in the triumph.

The run support was more than enough for Gonzales, who cruised through the Knights' lineup in a complete-game gem. She allowed just three hits to the WPU lineup, striking out three and walking none.

Megan Rybar collected hits in each of her three at bats in the win, serving as a spark plug in the crucial sixth-inning rally.

In stark contrast to game one, game two featured plenty of offense, with both lineups plating runs early in the second game of the twin bill.

Some savvy baserunning from Kaylee Buhrkuhl helped the Warriors scratch a run across in the top of the first, but the lead wouldn't last long for the Navy and Gold.

A Peyton Hergert two-run blast kickstarted a four-run bottom of the first for the Knights, forcing Corban to play from behind. The Warriors issued a strong response in the next half inning, however, plating five runs of their own to recapture the advantage. Buhrkuhl, Taylor Beasley, and Arase each collected RBI knocks in the stanza.

The lead was expanded when Corban added three more in the top of the third, helped along by a pair of defensive miscues from the Knights.

It wasn't until the top of the sixth that the Warriors put the game away for good, as a solo shot from Ivey Uppinghouse sparked a three-run rally that would end up invoking the run rule later in the stanza. In addition, Tabby Humphrey and Johnson both collected RBI singles in the half inning.

Entering the game in relief, Lauren Besse was exceptional out of the bullpen, earning the win after tossing five and one-thirds innings of scoreless ball.

Corban (10-6, 5-0 CCC) will be back in action tomorrow against the Knights, with the two teams concluding their four-game series with an 11 a.m. doubleheader at Warrior Field.
