PORTLAND, Ore. – The Corban University women's basketball team opened their Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) slate in the City of Roses, against the Knights of Warner Pacific. After leading by eight points going into halftime, the Navy and Gold fought to within three points of the Knights, but were unable to eclipse the WPU squad's 75-point offensive display. The Warriors lost a close one by the score of 75-72.
"Warner Pacific came out and got momentum in the third quarter and we just could not seem to get back in a good offensive rhythm," said head coach Bill Pilgeram.
On what was a difficult 28-of-68 (41.2%) night from the field for the Warriors, there were several positives to take away, as Holly Golenor, Shaelie Burgess, and Gracie McCoy each had wildly efficient scoring nights.
Golenor drained her shot attempts at a 7-of-9 clip, and added a 5-of-6 performance at the charity stripe. In addition to her scoring, she added eight boards, three assists, and a blocked shot to her stat line.
Another in the long list of double-doubles in Burgess' career was tallied in the game, as she popped off for 18 points and 12 rebounds. She also sent back one shot on the defensive end.
McCoy's night was highlighted by a perfect shooting percentage from behind the arc, as she drained all three of the three-point shots that she attempted in the matchup. She went 6-of-9 from the field and was productive on both ends of the floor, as she came up with four takeaways in the bout as well.
"Gracie came out and had one of her best games as a Warrior on both ends of the floor," said Pilgeram. "Shaelie, with another double-double, showed moments of dominance in the paint before being plagued by foul trouble."
Courtney Jackson (20 PTS, 4 REB, 7-13 FG) led the way for the Knights in a game where they shot just 38.6% as a team from the floor. Her 4-of-5 showing from downtown surely helped Warner Pacific in the long run.
Gabriella Bruno and Khloe Snair also factored into the victory, as they scored 19 and 16 points, respectively. Bruno went 10-of-15 at the line, earning several trips to the foul line. Snair was 6-of-9 from the field, as she splashed four three-pointers in the battle, in addition to her three steals on the defensive end.
"It is a blessing in this crazy type of year to be able to turn right back around and play them again tomorrow," said Pilgeram.
The Warriors (2-1, 0-1 CCC) will be back in Portland, as they prepare to exact their revenge and earn their first CCC victory of the spring campaign at 1 p.m. on Saturday.
