Garcia’s Golden Goal Propels Corban Women’s Soccer to 1-0 Triumph against Eagles

KIRKLAND, Wash. – Chanel Garcia was the overtime hero for the Corban University women's soccer team on Monday, lifting the Navy and Gold to a 1-0 win over Northwest University with a thrilling overtime golden goal in the 96th minute. With the triumph, the Warriors walk away with a valuable Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) weekend road sweep.

"The girls really showed a lot of fight today!" said interim head coach Tim Kagey. "It was a great way to end our trip."

Garcia's game-winner wrapped up a contest that was wild and unorthodox from the start. After a scoreless first half—during which the Warriors were only able to muster one shot—the contest was shaping up to be another low-scoring battle between the two teams.

Adding a wrinkle to the fold, a second-half lightning delay forced both squads to take a half-hour hiatus from play—the game resumed just after 3 p.m.

The Eagles once again out-shot Corban in the second half (6-3), but Warrior goalkeeper Devan Archer notched a trio of saves to help keep the contest even at zero. She finished with six total in the triumph, which marks her fourth shutout of the season.

Just over five minutes into overtime, Garcia headed in a gorgeous cross from Juliana Pires, finding the back of the net and delivering an exhilarating triumph for the Warriors. It's her second score of the season.

Though the Navy and Gold's opportunities came few and far between—Garcia's goal was one of just two shots on frame in the entire contest for the Warriors—the squad came up big when it mattered most.

The Warriors (5-2, 5-1 CCC) are off to an impressive start in conference play, and after this weekend, Corban is currently tied with Oregon Tech at the top of the CCC West Division with four games left to play.

The Navy and Gold will return home next weekend for consecutive matches against Warner Pacific University, before closing out the regular season with two road contests at Southern Oregon.
