KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team and Oregon Tech Owls each took turns flexing their offensive muscle on Saturday, as both squads walked away with lopsided triumphs en route to a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series split. The Warriors gave eight runs of support to their ace Zack Simon in an 8-2 game-one win, while a four-run first set the tone for a 12-6 victory for the Owls in the latter matchup.
In game one, the Corban offense picked up right where it left off yesterday, scoring four times in the bottom of the second. Travis Moore plated the first run with an RBI single, then Dakota Fingar opened the game up with a three-run blast to left just a couple of batters later.
A heads-up baserunning play from Maxwell Jeffrey helped the Warriors expand the lead in the third; the veteran third-baseman scored all the way from second base on a wild pitch, electrifying the Corban dugout.
After two quick outs in the bottom of the fifth, Corban mounted a two-out rally to tack on two more. Jeffrey singled to get it started, then Chris Grayson reached the hard way via a hit-by-pitch. Reese Fawley brought Jeffrey home by slicing a single into right, and then Moore immediately followed that up by scoring Grayson with his second RBI knock of the day.
Corban's scoring was rounded out in the bottom of the sixth, when Justin Tow raced home on a wild pitch to make it an 8-0 advantage, but the contest was already well out of reach with Simon's dominance on the hill.
The Warrior ace turned in his second-straight performance without allowing a run, tossing seven scoreless innings and striking out four to earn his fourth win of the season. Simon has now allowed one earned run or fewer in each of his past five starts, and his ERA sits at an impressive 1.93 on the season.
Oregon Tech stormed out of the gates in the series finale, registering base hits from each of the first four hitters the squad sent to the plate in the first inning. Jesse Dunham, Zack Malcolm, and Michael Tarakhchyan each collected run-scoring knocks in the stanza.
Corban got one of those runs back via a Kyle Clay sac fly in the bottom half of the frame, but the Owls kept expanding their lead, adding two more in the second and three in the fourth.
Fingar blasted his second homer of the day in the bottom of the fourth, trying to bring life to the Navy and Gold offense against OIT's Jacob Miller. The Navy and Gold would score in both of the next two frames, as well, but it wouldn't be enough to overcome the daunting early deficit.
Moore drove in a couple of Corban's runs in the defeat with a two-run double in the sixth, tallying multi-RBI efforts in all three games he played in this weekend.
Meanwhile, OIT's Kaleb Keelean was exceptional out of the leadoff spot, going 3-for-3 with three walks, two RBIs, and a pair of runs scored. Cleanup man Dalton Daily was stellar both at the plate and on defense, going 4-for-5 at the dish, while also making a handful of standout plays at shortstop. Tarakhchyan drove in four of Oregon Tech's runs, ending the day with a 3-for-5 effort.
Corban (9-19, 8-8 CCC) will hit the road next weekend, traveling to Caldwell, Idaho for a four-game series against College of Idaho on Friday and Saturday. First pitch is slated for 3 p.m. MST on Friday, while Saturday's doubleheader will kick off at 11 a.m. MST.
