LEWISTON, Idaho – The Corban University baseball team's second day at Harris Field in Lewiston, Idaho looked a lot like its first, with the Navy and Gold losing a late lead in Sunday's first game against 24th-ranked Lewis-Clark State College, and the hometown offense exploding for double-digit runs in the second contest of the twin bill.
In the end, LCSC earned a Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series sweep, winning game one by a 4-3 tally, and claiming a 12-2 triumph (seven innings) in the finale.
Similar to the series opener yesterday, the Navy and Gold possessed a lead in the late innings of game one on Sunday. Just like yesterday, it was once again Dillon Plew who produced the two-out, game-winning knock for the hometown squad, as his two-run bloop double would prove to be the difference in LCSC's 4-3 triumph in the first game of the doubleheader.
It was Corban that struck first in the contest, manufacturing a first-inning run despite failing to notch a hit in the stanza.
Lewis-Clark State got that run back on a Zach Needham sac fly in the bottom of the second, creating a 1-1 deadlock that would last until the bottom of the sixth.
Another run-scoring sac fly—this time from Luke White—would make it a 2-1 advantage for the hometown squad heading into the seventh. Showing its resiliency, Corban quickly erased the deficit with an RBI single from Justin Tow in the top of the stanza.
An unconventional play involving an errant throw from LCSC left fielder Sam Linscott vaulted the Navy and Gold in the top of the eighth, giving Corban the lead with just six outs left in the contest. Unable to hold the lead, however, Plew's well-placed two-bagger was enough to clinch the series win for LCSC.
Corban starter Zack Simon (4 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) threw well in limited action, with a fifth-inning rain delay forcing him out of the ballgame early. The loss went to Jackson Arnsdorf, who allowed three runs in relief, none of which were earned.
Six runs in the first two frames of game two gave Lewis-Clark State a commanding early lead in the finale, as the Corban staff labored to contain the high-powered LCSC bats.
Corban would plate a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth, one of which came from an RBI groundout from Kyle Clay, and the second of which crossed on an RBI single from Reese Fawley. It was too little, too late, however, as the hometown team would comfortably cruise to a 12-2 run-rule win after seven innings.
Corban (4-16, 3-5 CCC) will remain on the road next weekend, traveling to La Grande, Ore. for the squad's first look at the Eastern Oregon University baseball team, which is competing in its first season since 2006.
