No. 23 C of I Offense Too Much for Corban Softball on Day Two

CALDWELL, Idaho – After a pair of lopsided contests yesterday, the Corban University softball team battled in a pair of hard-fought slugfests against No. 23-ranked College of Idaho on Saturday. Unfortunately for the Navy and Gold, the high-powered Yote offense proved to be too much to overcome, as the hometown squad earned 11-8 and 10-6 victories en route to the series sweep.

"We answered back today with timely hitting; it just wasn't enough to earn a win," said head coach Rachel Martin. "We will turn it around next week."

The Yotes jumped out to sizeable early advantages in both contests, scoring six runs in the first two innings of game one, and seven runs through the first three innings of the finale. While Corban fought valiantly to get back into each battle, the early deficits would be too much to keep pace with.

Madison Wyllie, Ivey Uppinghouse, and Sophia Barbosa all hit two-run homers in game one to pace the Warriors' offensive efforts.

Both Wyllie (3-for-4, 2 RBI, R) and Makiah Johnson (3-for-4, RBI, 2 R) finished with three-hit performances in the defeat.

For College of Idaho, Kylie Smith (2-for-4), Trystin Crofts (2-for-4), and Kaily Christensen (3-for-4, 4 RBI), and Micha Fortune (2-for-3) all turned in multi-hit efforts at the dish for the hometown squad, which has now won eight-straight contests.

Trailing by seven early in game two, Uppinghouse hit her second homer of the day—this time a three-run shot—in an attempt to spark a Warrior rally. Kaylee Buhrkuhl and Johnson also lent their efforts to the comeback attempt, as each collected RBI base hits in the contest.

Lysette Villegas went 3-for-3 out of the nine hole with two RBIs to lead the way for the Yotes, while Lacie Miller blasted a homer and Kaylee MacDannald drove in four.

Corban (19-15, 12-6 CCC) will return to the comforts of Warrior Field for an eight-game homestand, hosting Bushnell University for a pair of doubleheaders next weekend on April 16-17.
