Game-One Pitching and Game-Two Bats Lead Corban Softball to DH Sweep of Bushnell

SALEM, Ore. – Pitching was the story in Friday afternoon's series opener between the Corban University softball team and Bushnell University, while the bats took center stage in game two. A one-hit, complete-game shutout from Ally Crakes led Corban to a 1-0 victory in the opener, while the Navy and Gold out-slugged the Beacons 10-8 in game two.

Though pitching was the headline in the first game of the day, the Warriors got off to a promising start at the dish. Makiah Johnson started things off with a bang in the bottom half of the first, skying a leadoff homerun over the right-center fence. It's her second leadoff long ball of the season, and her fourth homer overall.

That would be the only scoring of the contest on either side, however, as both Crakes and Beacon starter Miranda Jensen looked sharp in the series-opening battle in the circle.

Crakes would outduel her counterpart in the end, striking out seven Beacons and surrendering just one hit in the complete-game gem. Bushnell never escaped the infield in Crakes' dominating performance, as the lone hit for the visitors came from a high chopper on the infield from Alyssa Ferreira in the third inning.

The Warriors struck in the first inning of game two, as well, plating a trio of runs to give Kaylee Brown an early lead to work with. After Johnson raced home on a wild play involving a bunt single from Kaylee Buhrkuhl and a throwing error from Beacon pitcher Sam Silver, Ivey Uppinghouse left the yard with a blistering two-run homer to left-center—marking the second-straight game with a first-inning long ball for the Navy and Gold.

Corban batted around in the bottom of the third, pulling away with five runs, all of which came with two outs. Sarah Parker got the rally started, registering her first-career RBI by beating out an infield single to first. Beacon miscues extended the frame, eventually loading the bases for Tabby Humphrey, who slapped a two-run single down the left-field line to plate a pair of runs for the Navy and Gold. Johnson then followed that up with a two-run knock of her own, hooking a single through the right side to make it an 8-0 ballgame.

The Beacon bats finally broke through against the Warrior pitching staff in the top of the fifth, plating seven runs to climb right back into the contest. Anabel Mendez and Kerry Murphy each collected key two-RBI hits in the rally, during which the first 11 Bushnell hitters reached base.

With the momentum now in the visitor's dugout, the Warriors responded with a pair of runs in the bottom half of the stanza to create some breathing room. A run-scoring sac fly from Buhrkuhl plated the first run of the frame, and Uppinghouse's third hit of the contest—a double to left field—added another.

Bushnell would scratch away at the lead with another run in the sixth, but Holly Gonzales was able to preserve the victory en route to her first save of the season. Brown was credited with the victory, moving to 4-3 on the season.

Uppinghouse (3-for-4, HR, 3 RBI), Johnson (2-for-4, 2 RBI, R), and Humphrey (2-for-3, 2 RBI, 2 R) all put together multi-hit efforts for the Navy and Gold, while Noel Balderston (2-for-5, R) and Mendez (2-for-2, 3 RBI, 2 R) paced the Beacon lineup.

Corban (21-15, 14-6 CCC) and Bushnell (7-29, 4-16 CCC) will be back at it tomorrow at Warrior Field, wrapping up their four-game series with matchups at 11 a.m. and 1 p.m.
