No. 7 LC State Takes Series Finale against Corban Baseball, 8-4

KEIZER, Ore. – The Corban University baseball team wrapped up a four-game series against No. 7-ranked Lewis-Clark State College on Sunday, falling by an 8-4 final score at Volcanoes Stadium in the series finale. The high-powered LC State offense was once again impressive, scoring a total of 61 runs in the four-game sweep.

The visitors struck first in the contest, scoring three runs in the top of the third. Corban starter Tanner Lundberg got two quick outs in the frame, but a two-out single from Riley Way and a hit-by-pitch from Jack Johnson helped LCSC mount a threat.

Dillon Plew dunked a pop fly in front of Corban left fielder Kyle Clay to plate the speedy Way for the game's first run. Cleanup man Brock Ephan then continued to torment the Navy and Gold's pitching staff, hooking a two-out, two-run double down the left field line to make it a 3-0 ballgame.

Justin Tow helped Corban get one of those runs back in the bottom half of the stanza, ripping a two-out double over the shortstop's head to score courtesy runner Travis Moore.

The Navy and Gold had a prime opportunity in its next offensive opportunity, as well, as Estenio Sede led off the fourth with a single, and Kyle Clay followed that up with a double off the third base bag. Despite having two runners in scoring position with no outs, LC State southpaw Alec Holmes was able to strike out the next three Corban hitters to escape the jam.

After getting the hometown Warriors their first run of the game, Tow then drove in another with a sac fly in the bottom of the fifth, bringing the Navy and Gold within a run.

Dillon Plew's sixth home run of the season—a two-run shot to right—gave LCSC some breathing room in the top of the seventh. Unable to limit the damage, the Corban pitching staff would then surrender three walks and a hit-by-pitch in the half inning, helping the visitors plate one more.

Trailing by four, Corban scratched away at the deficit in the bottom of the seventh via an RBI single from Aidan Bunn. The rookie third baseman smoked a line drive through the left side to score Reese Fawley, and then moved to second base on a single to right from Tow. Both baserunners would advance on a wild pitch from LC reliever Matt Driver.

With yet another prime opportunity to get back into the ballgame, Corban was once again unable to find the timely knock it needed, as Driver was able to strikeout Nate Cantonwine and induce a groundout from Estenio Sede to wiggle out of trouble.

Lewis-Clark tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the ninth to pad their lead. Tow continued his strong day at the plate with an opposite-field solo blast in the bottom of the inning, but Corban's scoring would stop there, as the visiting Warriors sealed a series sweep.

Despite earning the victory, Sunday's game represents the first time the dangerous LC offense—which entered the contest averaging the second most runs per game in the NAIA with 10.97—had been held to less than 10 runs since March 20, having notches double-digit run tallies in the squad's 12 previous contests.

Corban (11-25, 10-14) will continue its 12-game homestand next weekend, hosting Eastern Oregon University in the Navy and Gold's final home Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) series of the season. On the following weekend, the Warriors will welcome Simpson University for a non-conference set in its final home contests of the 2021 season.
