SALEM, Ore. – Junior
Karlie Gerlinger registered a career-high scoring performance, as Corban's women's basketball team earned a hard-fought victory, 71-66, over Multnomah University in Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) action Monday night on Jim Skagen Court.
"Multnomah made a big run on us and even got the lead in the second half," said head coach
Bill Pilgeram. "I was proud of how the team responded and made big plays down the stretch."
With the win, Corban improves to 6-4 overall and 3-4 in CCC games. Meanwhile, Multnomah falls to 0-13 overall and 0-7 in conference contests.
The Navy and Gold were led offensively by Gerlinger and junior
Holly Golenor, who tallied a team-high tying 16 points each. Golenor also grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds to record her second double-double of the season.
Along with Gerlinger and Golenor, sophomore
Halle Wright, who recorded the program's first-ever triple-double last week against Linfield, chipped in with 15 points, eight rebounds, and a team-leading five assists. Sophomore
Lee Audrey Norris rounded out the Warrior quartet that scored in double figures with her season-high 12 points hitting four shots from beyond the three-point line.
Multnomah started the game earning a quick 7-3 lead on a Katie Skramstad three-pointer with 7:39 on the clock. Corban battled back to take a one-point lead (11-10) via an 8-3 run, as Gerlinger connected on a jumper at the 5:18 mark. Using a 9-0 run, the host Lions pulled ahead 19-11 less than three minutes later when Maddie Hill connected on the third of Multnomah's three straight shots from long distance with just under three minutes left in the first quarter. Over the final two-plus minutes, the Navy and Gold put together a quarter-ending 11-2 run to take a 22-21 lead into the second quarter.
Corban increased its lead over the opening six minutes of the second quarter, as the visiting Warriors scored nine of the first 11 points taking a 31-23 lead on a lay-in by
Shaelie Burgess with 4:07 on the clock. Multnomah battled back to within two points (33-31) with 1:54 left before Corban closed the first half on a 10-0 run taking a 43-31 lead into halftime.
The second half began with Multnomah scoring the first 13 points to take a 44-43 lead on a Clare Faber lay-in with exactly six minutes on the clock. Neither team earned more than a three-point lead over the final six minutes, as the host Lions clung to a slim two-point advantage (54-52) heading into the fourth quarter.
In the opening two minutes of the fourth quarter, Multnomah increased their lead to eight points (62-54) on a Faber bucket with 8:12 left. Exactly three minutes later, Corban concluded a 9-0 run on a Gerlinger three-pointer to earn a 63-62 lead. Despite a hard-fought effort from the host Lions down the stretch, the Navy and Gold never relinquished its lead for the remainder of the game putting together timely shooting and clutch free throws to earn the 71-66 victory.
Multnomah was led offensively by Alaygza Portis with a game-high 18 points, while Skramstad and Hill added 15 and 12 points, respectively. Faber led the Lions with seven rebounds, while Payton Wangler and Portis each handed out a game-high six assists.
On the night, Corban combined to shoot 27-for-61 (44.3%) from the field, while also knocking down 9-of-21 (42.9%) from beyond the three-point line and were 8-for-13 (61.5%) at the free throw line. On the other hand, Multnomah was a combined 22-for-57 (38.6%) from the field, 10-for-26 (38.5%) from long distance, and 12-for-16 (75.0%) at the charity stripe.
These same two teams will lock horns again tomorrow night – Tuesday, April 20 – concluding back-to-back Cascade Collegiate Conference games beginning at 7:00 p.m. in the Rose City.
