Corban Softball and Northwest Each Register Run-Rule Triumphs on Day One

SALEM, Ore. – The Corban University softball team welcomed Northwest University to Warrior Field on Friday in the start of the Warriors' final home series of the 2021 regular season. Each team collected a lopsided triumph in the day-one doubleheader, as Corban won the opener by a 10-1 final score (five innings), and the Eagles claimed game two by a 13-4 tally (five innings).

At the conclusion of game two today, Corban honored its senior classes from both this season (2021) and last (2020). Nine members of the current squad—Sophia Barbosa, Kaylee Brown, Tabby Humphrey, Sarah Probasco, Ivey Uppinghouse, Megan Rybar, Ally Crakes, Makiah Johnson, and Kaylee Buhrkuhl—were recognized as they compete in their final home games of their respective careers this weekend.

"I couldn't have asked for a better class of resilient leaders to start my career here at Corban," said head coach Rachel Martin about her seniors. "I cannot wait to see how these young women go on to impact their communities."

Corban wasted no time getting started in game one, plating three runs in the bottom of the first. An RBI single from Madison Wyllie and a two-run double from Rybar accounted for the scoring, which would be the first of a trio of three-run stanzas for the squad in the series opener.

A no-doubt solo shot to right field from Johnson—which tied her for the team lead with six home runs on the season—padded the cushion in the second, and then a three-run long ball from Rybar in the bottom of the fourth blew the game open.

Rybar ended game one with an impressive stat line, going a perfect 3-for-3 and driving in five, all while finishing a triple shy of the cycle.

Leading 7-1 heading into the bottom of the fifth, Buhrkuhl ended the game with some dramatic flair, lifting an opposite-field three-run homer to right center to invoke the eight-run rule and seal the win.

Crakes (5 IP, 1 ER, 4 K) earned the victory in the circle, surrendering one earned run or less for the third-straight game.

Things appeared to be going in the Navy and Gold's favor in game two, as well, with the Warriors hopping out to another early three-run lead via a trio of runs in the third.

The seniors were once again at the center of the action, as Johnson drove in Humphrey with an RBI double. After that, Buhrkuhl then plated Johnson with a run-scoring single to left, and the senior shortstop would eventually cross home on a sac fly from Uppinghouse.

That lead wouldn't last long, however, as Northwest exploded for eight runs in the following half inning. Four of those runs came from a grand slam off the bat of Jessica Nunes, who cleared the bases on a long home run to left, helping the Eagles grab some valuable separation.

The floodgates opened in the top of the fifth, when Northwest added five more runs to its tally. Buhrkuhl would launch her second long ball of the day in the bottom of the fifth—a solo shot to virtually the same spot as her game-one homer—but the deficit would be far too much to overcome as the squads played to a doubleheader split.

The two teams will be right back at it tomorrow at Warrior Field, as Corban (23-17, 15-8 CCC) and Northwest (7-25, 6-17 CCC) will wrap up their four-game set. First pitch for game one of the doubleheader is slated for 11 a.m.
