Simon’s Complete Game Helps Lift Corban Baseball to Series Split with C of I

CALDWELL, Idaho – After falling in a tightly-contested first game on Saturday, 4-3, the Corban University baseball team rode a brilliant complete-game effort from ace Zack Simon to a 7-2 triumph over College of Idaho in the series finale. With the doubleheader split, the two squads also split the weekend series.

"Any time you split a series on the road, it's a good series," said head coach Derek Legg. "We're looking forward to a good week of practice before competing again next weekend. Happy Easter!"

Both the Warriors and Yotes struck for a run in the first inning of game one, as a Nate Cantonwine RBI double got Corban on the board early. The Yotes quickly erased the deficit, striking back with a run-scoring single from Matthew Clay in the bottom half of the stanza.

Both starters—College of Idaho's Dimick Wood and Corban's Jackson Arnsdorf—tossed a pair of unblemished frames after that, but Arndorf's command wavered in a shaky fourth for the Navy and Gold.

After three free passes—two walks and a hit by pitch—loaded the sacks with two outs, Arnsdorf walked Yote nine hitter Ben Hansen to force in the go-ahead run. A defensive miscue from Corban keystone Reese Fawley on the next batter then allowed two unearned runs to cross, with those being the final runs scored by the Yotes in the contest.

An RBI groundout from Kyle Clay helped the Navy and Gold scratch one back in the sixth, and a solo shot from Fawley in the following inning pulled the Warriors within one. In the end, however, Corban was unable to erase the deficit against Wood, who ended up going the distance in a complete-game victory on the mound.

Corban handed the ball to its ace in the series finale, in hopes of salvaging a road series split. Simon turned in another gritty effort on the hill, notching the first complete game of his career.

The righty surrendered just one earned run, striking out nine Yotes and spreading out seven hits en route to his fifth win of campaign.

Run-scoring singles from Aidan Bunn and Maxwell Jeffrey provided him with some support in the fifth, but it was a four-run eighth that put the contest out of reach. Taking advantage of some erratic pitching from College of Idaho, Fawley delivered a clutch two-run single to right to pad Corban's cushion.

Sloppy pitching and defense from the hometown squad allowed the Warriors to plate two more in the eighth, and another in the ninth, rounding out Corban's run production in the game.

Clay finished with a multi-hit effort in the game-four triumph, going 2-for-5 from the dish.

The Warriors (11-21, 10-10 CCC) will play host to No. 7-ranked Lewis-Clark State College next weekend, hosting LC State on Friday at 5 p.m., Saturday at 12 p.m. and 3 p.m., and Sunday at 11 a.m.
