SALEM, Ore. – Trailing by 14 at the half, the Corban University women's basketball team climbed all the way back to take the lead against Bushnell University with 6:43 left in the fourth quarter. The valiant comeback was spoiled by a handful of timely buckets from the Beacons down the stretch, as Bushnell completed the weekend sweep with an 88-74 triumph on Saturday night.
"We came out in the second half and played like the team we want to be known for," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "That run to get all the way back to taking the lead was the best, most passionate basketball we have played all year. They were able to make a couple of big shots, but I was very proud of our effort after halftime!"
The explosive Beacon offense—spearheaded by the dangerous tandem of Morgan McKinney and Aspen Slifka—notched 28 points in the first quarter alone, showing glimpses of the same kind of dominance that propelled the squad to a 24-point win yesterday.
Corban didn't back down, however, coming out of the locker room and outscoring the visitors by a 25-16 margin in the third quarter, electrifying the Warrior bench.
The team managed to take the lead, 67-66, on a clutch three from Gemma LaVergne at the 6:43 mark, but the Beacons would go on to outscore the Warriors 22-7 in the closing minutes to seal the weekend sweep.
Slifka (19 points, six assists, five rebounds) and McKinney (18 points, eight rebounds) once again led the charge, though 11-point performances off the bench from Aly Mirable and Kalina Rojas were perhaps even more valuable for Beacon head coach Chad Meadors. Slifka was key down the stretch for the Beacons, scoring 10 of her points in the fourth quarter.
Giveaways proved costly for the Navy and Gold, as Bushnell scored 18 of its points off turnovers on Saturday.
Halle Wright ended the night with another impressive showing for the Warriors, registering 16 points, eight assists, and five boards in a strong overall effort. Heating up in the second half, Holly Golenor scored 13 of her 15 total points after the midway point, while also grabbing eight rebounds (team-high) on the night.
Shaelie Burgess was the third Warrior to finish in double-figures, scoring 11 points on 4-of-10 from the field.
Extending their win streak to five, the Beacons (6-2, 5-1 CCC) are on a trajectory to again compete for a top spot in the conference standings.
With the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) home slate now complete, the Warriors (4-4, 2-4 CCC) will travel north next weekend for a two-game set with Multnomah. Tip-off on Friday is slated for 4 p.m., while Saturday's action is scheduled to begin at 1 p.m.
