Warrior Women’s Soccer Falls to SOU in Regular-Season Finale, 2-1

ASHLAND, Ore. – Competing in the final regular-season contest of the 2020-21 campaign, the Corban University women's soccer team fell to Southern Oregon University by a 2-1 tally. The Warriors mounted a comeback to attempt to erase a two-goal deficit, but the rally would fall just short in the end.

With Oregon Tech defeating Northwest this afternoon in Kirkland by a 2-0 final score, the Owls claim the Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) West Division Championship outright, earning an automatic berth to the NAIA National Championships. The Warriors finish their CCC slate as the grouping's regular-season runner-up.

"This was not the way we wanted to end conference play," said interim head coach Tim Kagey. "The game came down to a few mistakes we made as a team. I am very proud of this group."

The Warriors possess an outside shot at an at-large berth to the NAIA Championships, though the likelihood of that outcome is relatively slim.

Sarah Mauk helped the Raiders jump out to an early lead on Tuesday, finding the back of the net in the 16th minute to end a three-game scoreless drought for Southern Oregon.

In the 61st minute, Gabbi Johnson extended the lead to two, capitalizing on an erratic clearance pass from the Warriors. Devan Archer came off her line to try to beat Johnson to the ball, but the Raider forward was able to corral it and poke it into an open net.

A few minutes later (63'), Mei Suetsugu cut the deficit in half with her sixth goal of the season, tying Juliana Pires for the team lead in the category. Suetsugu struck directly off a beautiful throw-in from Jamine Biava, giving the Warriors some late life.

From there on, the Navy and Gold sought frantically for an equalizer, but the squad was unable to break through the Southern Oregon defense as the clock wound down.

Should Tuesday indeed mark Corban's final contest of the season, it would be the end of an undeniably successful campaign for the program. The Warriors' eight wins in CCC play is tied for their most since 2004, and they managed to accomplish it in just 10 conference competitions.
