SALEM, Ore. – With the first official contest of the season just a couple days away for the Corban University women's soccer team, Corban director of soccer Tim Kagey shed light on the talented 2021 recruiting class that has joined the squad for the upcoming fall regimen.
Learn a little about the squad's new additions below.
Makida Herbert – 5'7" – Goalkeeper – Mucurapo West Secondary/Essex CC – Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago
Herbert brings an exceptional pedigree to the Navy and Gold, hoping to make an impact between the pipes for the Warriors. Coming to Salem from Trinidad and Tobago, Herbert represented the country's U-17 National Team at the CONCACAF Caribbean Women's Qualifier, as well as the Women's Futsal Buenos Aires Youth Olympics in 2018. Prior to joining the Warriors, she competed at Essex County College, where she earned Second-Team All-Conference accolades in 2019.
While at Corban, Herbert is planning to study biology.
Emma Braley – 5'9" – Midfielder – Joseph A. Gergori HS – Modesto, Calif.
Braley, a native of Modesto, Calif., adds athleticism to the Warrior squad. She was a three-sport athlete in her high school career at Joseph A. Gregori High School, competing in basketball all four years, track all four years, and soccer in her senior season. In her 2021 season on the pitch, she was named Most Inspirational by her teammates, received the Coaches' Award, and was voted an All-League Honorable Mention.
She plans to major in biomedical science while in school at Corban.
Josie Brence – 5'5" – Defender – Middleton HS – Middleton, Idaho
Bolstering the Warriors' defensive efforts, Brence comes to Corban from Middleton, Idaho. During her high school career in the Gem State, she competed at Middleton High School, where she put together a decorated career for the Vikings. In 2019, she was a Second-Team All-Conference award-winner and Honorable-Mention All-State honoree. A year later, she received even more hardware, being named a Second-Team All-Conference and First-Team All-State recipient in 2020.
Brence will study kinesiology in her time at Corban.
Shayla Hatfield – 5'5" – Midfielder/Forward – East Linn Christian HS – Albany, Ore.
Hatfield brings a utility skillset to Corban's squad, capable of playing in multiple spots on the pitch. Hailing from nearby Albany, Ore., she excelled at East Linn Christian High School, where she was named an Honorable-Mention All-League recipient in her junior season and a Second-Team All-League honoree in her senior season. Impressively, due to her school's lack of a girl's soccer team, Hatfield accomplished all of this while competing on the boy's squad.
Hatfield intends to major in kinesiology while at the school.
Anabel Lin – 5'5" – Midfielder – Liberty Christian HS/Columbia Basin CC – West Richland, Wash.
Lin, a transfer from Columbia Basin Community College, brings a strong résumé to the Warrior ranks. She was twice named an All-League selection in her high school years and excelled in the classroom, as well. Lin received the Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) Art Fierro Scholarship Award in 2021 while at Columbia Basin, honoring her for her exceptional work on and off the field of play.
Kendall Rubright – 5'7" – Midfielder/Defender – Sandpoint HS – Sandpoint, Idaho
Rubright, a Sandpoint, Idaho native, brings a versatile skillset to the Warrior squad, capable of playing both in the midfield and on the back line. In 2017, Rubright was awarded All-League and All-Region honors for Sandpoint High School, in addition to being named the Newcomer of the Year. Rubright played club soccer with the Spokane Sounders and played on the Washington State team, where she also was named Newcomer of the Year.
Maggie Whitehead – 5'1" – Defender – Newberg HS – Newberg, Ore.
Whitehead heads to Corban from Newberg, Ore., where she played soccer and ran track for the Tigers. The incoming freshman defender will look to make an impact in the fall after showing elite talent during her high school career. She was voted the Team MVP, was named First-Team All-League, and Honorable-Mention All-American during her junior campaign.
Whitehead will study kinesiology at Corban, hoping to go into physical therapy.
Sophia Garrison – 5'6" – Defender – Wenatchee HS/Walla Walla CC – Wenatchee, Wash.
Garrison transfers to the Navy and Gold from Walla Walla Community College, having already enjoyed success at the collegiate level. Prior to her time there, she competed at Wenatchee High School, and her experience makes her a valuable asset to the Warrior back line. As a defender at Walla Walla, she notched a goal and an assist during her junior-college career.
Aubrey Smith – 5'2" – Midfielder – Decatur HS/Tacoma CC – Federal Way, Wash.
Smith, a transfer from Tacoma Community College, will bring experience to the Warrior midfield. The junior will join the Navy and Gold as a two-time Northwest Athletic Conference (NWAC) All-Star, having excelled in her time at the junior-college level. Before that, she was exceptional on the pitch for Decatur High School.
Smith plans to study computer science while at Corban.
The dynamic group of newcomers joins an experienced group of returners, with the Navy and Gold returning each of its top-five goal-scorers—Juliana Pires, Mei Suetsugu, Skyla Vogelpohl, Chanel Garcia, and Jamine Biava—from the 2021 spring season.
