HELENA, Mont. – In the squad's first contest of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) competition, the Corban University women's soccer team earned a resounding victory on the road against Carroll College on Sunday, cruising past the Saints by a 3-0 final margin.
Once again, Maria-Frances Serrant turned in an exceptional offensive effort for the Navy and Gold, notching her second-straight game with a brace to help lead the squad to victory.
Serrant picked up right where she left off at the conclusion of the squad's non-conference regimen, wasting no time scoring her first CCC goal of the season. In just the sixth minute of play, Juliana Pires sent a through ball to Serrant, who corralled it roughly 20 yards from goal and fired a strike past Saints goalkeeper Sarah Conway.
That gave the Warriors an early spark on the road, deflating the home bench from the onset. The hometown team fought to equalize, creating a number of opportunities for themselves, but Corban keeper Makida Herbert was up to the task each time, tallying a season-high eight saves (twice her previous season high) in Sunday afternoon's win.
The Warriors finally cushioned the lead in the 81st minute, and it was once against Serrant who delivered. This time it was Emma Rosner who assisted the score, as Serrant broke away and slipped past Conway—who came off her line in an attempt to stop the prolific scorer—and poked one into the back of the net for some valuable insurance.
Just one minute later, Klarissa Barajas put the game on ice, finishing a pass from Chanel Garcia to stretch the deficit to three in the 83rd minute.
It's an impressive overall performance for the club, which starts CCC play in dominant fashion with a significant road win. It's the first time the squad has reached the three-goal plateau in a game this season, and the third-straight clean sheet for Herbert and the back line.
Corban (5-0, 1-0 CCC) will have two more road matchups next weekend, traveling to College of Idaho on Friday, September 24 and No. 15 Eastern Oregon on Saturday, September 25. Each match is slated to begin at 6:30 p.m. local time.
