COLLEGE PLACE, Wash. – The Corban University women's basketball team flexed its offensive muscle on Saturday, seeing four players reach double figures in a 70-58 win on the road against Walla Walla University.
"The team came out with a great mindset tonight and played with great energy for 40 minutes," said head coach Bill Pilgeram. "They joyfully competed and earned a victory tonight. Our balance really was big with everyone who played contributing positive things to the win."
It was the hometown team that came out swinging early, as the Wolves laid claim to an eight-point lead at the end of the first quarter. Showing resilience, the Navy and Gold responded with a pivotal 30-point second quarter, holding the Wolves to just four points in the stanza to take a 43-25 advantage into the locker room at halftime.
The Warriors built on that lead in the third quarter, and withstood a late Walla Walla run to hold onto victory, notching its third-highest point total in a game so far this season by the time of the final whistle.
As a unit, the Navy and Gold shot 46.8% from the floor, just off its season-best mark (46.9% versus Oregon Tech on December 17).
Once again, Holly Golenor was at the center of Corban's offensive efforts, tallying her third-straight double-double with a stellar 24-point, 13-rebound performance. She was as efficient as she was effective, going 11-of-15 from the floor in a new career high in scoring.
Gemma LaVergne flirted with the second triple-double in Warrior women's basketball history, ending the night with 13 points, nine assists, and eight boards from the back court. Her fellow guard Gracie McCoy was also exceptional, ending the night with 12 points, five assists, and six rebounds.
"Holly's presence in the paint was tremendous," Pilgeram added. "Meanwhile, Gracie and Gemma ran the show very well with 13 assists combined."
Madison Hodnett continues to come into her own in the paint, finishing a pair of boards shy of a double-double (10 points, eight rebounds) in her second-straight double-digit scoring effort.
With a short-handed roster and an exhausting week of travel, which was split between three road games in three different states, Saturday's gritty victory was a total team effort from the Navy and Gold ensemble.
Corban (3-16, 2-10 CCC) will return to the comforts of the C.E. Jeffers Sports Center next weekend, hosting Multnomah on Friday (5:30 p.m.) and Warner Pacific on Saturday (3 p.m.) in a pair of Cascade Collegiate Conference (CCC) battles.
