SALEM, Ore. - After a hectic start to the weekend with cancelations and postponements, the Corban University women's basketball team came to play on Saturday afternoon and hung with the Northwest University Eagles until the final buzzer.
Head coach Bill Pilgeram had this to say about tonight's game, "I was very proud of the effort and passion tonight after an extended break with injuries and Illness. With all of the uncertainty, it felt good to get back on the court this week and the team is leaving everything on the floor every opportunity we get."
The first quarter of the contest was back and forth with a total of five early lead changes. Holly Golenor led the Warrior scoring in the first quarter with five points, and Alyssa Wyllie contributed an assist, a rebound, and a bucket for the Navy and Gold.
The second period found the Warriors down, 9-15. Gracie McCoy and Gemma LaVergne teamed up to be on offensive threat, with LaVergne sinking three from deep and McCoy notching a pair of assists.
An impressive rebounding effort by Keila Tsutsui (7) propelled the Navy and Gold in the first half. Tsutsui, although small in stature, played big and was not out-hustled by any player on either team. The Warriors ended the first-half 24-27.
The third quarter proved troublesome for the Warriors as the Eagles shot a game high 42.9% from the field and a perfect 5-5 from the charity stripe. Northwest held Corban to just four points in the quarter.
The fourth period was a big one for LaVergne, who nailed another trio of threes in the first two and a half minutes of play. The star guard recorded 24 points, five rebounds and three assists in the contest. Also of note, were Josie Ferry and Madison Hodnett, who worked hard for position under the basket, while battling a tall and physical Eagle team.
Corban fought hard throughout, but was unable to outlast Northwest. The final score was Eagles 60, Warriors 44.
Tomorrow's contest with the Evergreen State College Geoducks will not take place due to COVID protocols. Corban (1-14, 1-8 CCC) will take the court on Tuesday, January 11 at Bushnell University (9-7, 6-2 CCC). Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
